Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Will Make Or Break A Sci-Fi Legacy

By Douglas Helm | Published

Expectations were low when the clumsily-titled Rise of the Planet of the Apes was announced as a reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise. Fans were happily proven wrong, and we were given a fantastic sci-fi trilogy that culminated with 2017’s War of the Planet of the Apes. Now, the franchise’s fate rests with the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, determining if the reboot franchise continues its successful streak or hits a hard roadblock.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes seems like it will be continuing the reboot trilogy’s streak of great villains…

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes trailer looks fantastic, so fans are hopeful. Andy Serkis’ incredible three-film performance of Caesar came to an end in the previous film, and the new film will take place 300 years later. In this film, various ape civilizations emerge from the oasis Caesar found while humans return to their primitive state.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes seems to be continuing the reboot trilogy’s streak of great villains, as Kevin Durand’s Proximus Caesar seems to be stealing every scene he’s in. Proximus seeks to enslave other clans and use human technologies to further advance apes, while Noa (Owen Teague) joins with a human named Nova (Freya Allen) to determine the future of ape and humankind.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes might give the revived franchise new life, or bring the franchise to a swift end.

As far as premises go, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes seems great. It’s also good to know that franchise stalwarts Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver will be returning to co-write and produce the film. Jaffa and Silver were producers of all of the films of the reboot trilogy and co-wrote the screenplays for the first two films.

New blood to the franchise will be director Wes Ball, who is best known for directing the Maze Runner films. Josh Friedman, best known for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Patrick Aison, best known for Prey, also joined the writing team. While Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is losing some key pieces like Matt Reeves and Andy Serkis, it does seem like a really solid creative team that could take the franchise where it needs to go.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will hit theaters on May 10.

This team is pressured to deliver with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. In 2022, Disney and 20th Century announced that this would be the first in a new trilogy of films. Needless to say, fans would be happy to have more from the franchise, but only if it’s able to maintain the same level of quality as the previous trilogy.

So far, things look good for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, but we’ll just have to wait and see if it all comes together on the big screen. It would be cool to see the reboot franchise eventually meet the timeline from the original classic 1968 Charlton Heston Planet of the Apes film. We’ll find out if Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes can live up to lofty expectations regarding theaters on May 10.
