Keanu Reeves and Jason Statham will work together for the first time on a new action movie produced by Netflix. According to our trusted and proven sources, the Matrix star and the guy from Crank will star in The Redemption, a movie about reformed criminals who take on a corrupt police officer, in what sounds like it is sure to be a movie with both moral ambiguities and high-octane action. D.J. Caruso is set to direct the film, which will presumably be released streaming on Netflix.

The Redemption will star Keanu Reeves and Jason Statham as part of a team of former convicts who band together to take down a dirty cop. It is not clear whether Reeves and Statham were partners or involved in the same criminal activities before the events of the movies, but the safe money is that the cop in question is part of whatever took them down in the first place. It is not known who the other members of the former criminal gang will be played by, but when you have two bonafide action stars as leads, it could be anyone.

Although both Keanu Reeves and Jason Statham have been world-renowned action stars for years, The Redemption will mark the first time they have starred in the same film. Interestingly, though, both men have been part of franchises that feature increasingly large casts of action stars as they go on.

For Keanu Reeves, that is the John Wick franchise, which began with featuring Lance Reddick and Willem Dafoe as character actors who have been associated with action films. However, each subsequent installment has brought in more and more, including Peter Stormare, Common, Halle Berry, Mark Dacascos, Donnie Yen, Hiroyuki Sanada, Scott Adkins, and Clancy Brown. By the time The Continental and Ballerina spin-offs are released, there undoubtedly be a whole lot more.

Jason Statham, of course, has starred as Lee Christmas in the Expendables franchise of films, which has included Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis at their most sleep-walkiest, and many more. He will return to the franchise for the fourth Expendables movie soon, which just shows the improbable longevity of the series.

For his part, D.J. Caruso has been a dependable journeyman director for years, frequently helming action movies like Vin Diesel’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage and Eagle Eye. However, his career is full of departures from the genre like the romantic drama Redeeming Love, the coming-of-age film Standing Up, and the paranoia thriller Disturbia, so you know he at least has some range.

Both Keanu Reeves and Jason Statham have a busy schedule of sequels ahead of them (notably Constantine 2, The Meg 2: The Trench, and Spy 2), so it will be interesting to see how they differentiate The Redemption from those films. Hopefully, the duo will manage to wring some Heat-style meditations on the duality of criminals and law and how similar they both can be. But with explosions.
