Josh Brolin is probably set to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a long, long time. Not only did he play Thanos over one of the coolest multiple-movie arcs ever, but he’s also taken the screen as Cable in the Deadpool movies as well. And even though Thanos seemed to definitely meet his end during the events of Avengers: Endgame, we know this is Marvel after all and no death is necessarily safe. Characters, even dead ones, are fair game as long as the franchise is around. So it’s not all that big a surprise that Brolin will, in fact, be returning to reprise his Mad Titan, playing Thanos in Marvel’s Phase Four.

We originally had the scoop that Josh Brolin was coming back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as both Thanos and the aforementioned Cable. It just wasn’t totally clear at the time in what fashion those would come on to the screen. From this latest rumor, it looks like Thanos is going to have a role in the upcoming Eternals

From the comic book canon, this casting move makes total sense and is a great reason to bring Josh Brolin into the fold. Thanos is the son of two Eternals, A’lars and Sui-San but unlike those characters has a different “genetic” set which makes him appear less human than his parents. It stands to reason Eternals uses its plot as something of an origin story for the titular group. This would involve going back in time and in turn setting some of the stage for why Thanos ended up the way he did: power hungry and evil.

Eternals has already put together quite an amazing cast. Angelina Jolie has been cast as the warrior Thena adding one of Hollywood’s biggest names to the franchise. And others in the group will include but aren’t limited to Nick Madden as Ikaris, Salam Hayek as Ajak, and Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo. Josh Brolin is joining a stacked cast and honestly, including him in the mix helps to ground the group in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe especially if it’s happening in a different time period.

The Eternals are an incredibly powerful group of beings who look human but have close to god-like powers over energy and other elements. They are significantly more powerful than what we’ve seen in previous phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, mostly operating outside of those stories throughout the comic books. But bringing back Josh Brolin as Thanos does help cure some of those continuity and plot issues involved in an overlap.

And again, Brolin might be double-dipping in the Marvel Universe right now. There’s a good chance he reprises his Cable role with Deadpool finally folds a new movie into the MCU. Now that Marvel owns the rights to the latter character, that franchise is set to fold into things as well. Look, Marvel news is coming out every day at this point with Phase Four ramping up. WandaVision kicked things off and it’s been a slew of news and rumors almost daily.
