John Wick 5 And More Spinoffs Are On The Way, Franchise Getting Too Big?

Lionsgate has confirmed that not only is John Wick 5 currently in development, but there’s plenty more where that came from in the form of spinoffs, according to Comic Book. We’re already presently getting spinoffs like the upcoming 2024 film, Ballerina, in which Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as the franchise’s titular hitman, as well as the the Peacock prequel series, The Continental: From the World of John Wick miniseries, but it seems like Lionsgate is just getting started, and have big plans for the franchise.

John Wick 5 Is Already In Development

Given how John Wick 4 concluded, fans may be wondering how the next film will address the fact that John Wick was buried after meeting his fate, but that hasn’t stopped writers from attempting to find a suitable workaround that doesn’t mess with the established narrative.

Joe Drake, Lionsgate Motion Picture Groups chair, revealed that the franchise started developing John Wick 5 before the writers strike commenced, and states that they’ve already continued the process upon the strike’s conclusion. What’s more, John Wick director Chad Stahelski has hinted at the fact that he and his creative team have enough ideas to carry the franchise for several more feature films. But despite having so many ideas in line to continue the franchise, Stahelski has alluded to the fact that they don’t presently have the story for John Wick 5 on lock as of this writing.

When We Last Saw John Wick…

For John Wick 5 to make sense, however, we need to acknowledge the fact that John Wick 4 ended with John Wick’s death and subsequent burial. Stahelski mentioned to Collider that there were two endings shot for the last John Wick film, one of which suggests that he didn’t actually meet his fate upon the film’s conclusion. He went on to say that test audiences preferred the ending that made it into the theatrical cut because it was more open-ended than the ending that showed John Wick alive and well.

John Wick Is A Money-Making Franchise

Though Stahelski doesn’t want to put out John Wick 5 as a cash grab, it goes without saying that he loves the franchise and the characters found within its many installments. And when you consider how lucrative the franchise has been a whole, it makes sense that the John Wick train will continue to barrel forward if audiences are receptive to more world-building and iconic action-packed sequences. To date, the John Wick films have collectively earned over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office.

John Wick 4 Is The Highest Rated Film In The Franchise To Date

Critically speaking, there hasn’t been a miss in the John Wick universe. It’s not uncommon for film franchises to lose steam on the critical front after a couple of sequels, but John Wick 4 currently has a 94 percent critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated installment so far. In other words, as long as fans and critics want more, and the franchise remains profitable, it’d be foolish to not consider putting out a John Wick 5.

…But Is Keanu Reeves On Board?

And Stahelski asserts that if the script is compelling enough, then Keanu Reeves will most certainly be on board to reprise his role as our favorite killing machine in John Wick 5, especially if he didn’t actually die in John Wick 4.
