As if acting, producing, and making regular appearances on the WWE weren’t enough for one of Hollywood’s biggest faces, John Cena has once again proven that he is an unstoppable force. Possibly one of the busiest faces in show business, the 17-time champ recently entered the realm of superheroes, taking on the role of DC’s Peacemaker this past summer for The Suicide Squad. While fans of the eccentric superhero (villain) eagerly await the character’s return to the screen in the upcoming Peacemaker spinoff series, Cena surprised a crowd of his fans this past weekend by donning his full Peacemaker get-up.

The appearance came at this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con masquerade costume contest, specifically during the Peacemaker costume portion. Keeping with his pristine stage skills at wooing a crowd, John Cena introduced himself (as if he had to) and joked with the crowd that he was voted the sixth best Peacemaker costume this year. The celebrity went on to give a heartfelt thank you to the crowd before he presented a teaser for the upcoming HBO series starring Cena as he once again takes on the role of DC’s Peacemaker for the titular series. Cena even teased the internet with his appearance that same day when he posted a picture of his hefty arm to Twitter with the caption “keep the peace”. Later that day, the official Comic-Con San Diego Twitter account would confirm the appearance.

While the Peacemaker, also known as Christopher Smith, was first introduced in comics back in the 1960s, the haywire characters recent revival came from the film adaptation originated by John Cena in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. The gun-crazed character, who ironically loves peace so much that he’s willing to kill for it, is recruited by Amanda Waller to become a member of the Task Force X team that conducts secret missions. Although the movie itself was considered to be a box office flop, it appears that Warner Bros. and DC have put all their faith in the Hollywood strong man to keep the Peacemaker momentum going.

Warner Bros. and DC first announced over a year ago that the character would be getting his own spinoff Peacemaker series on HBO Max. The 8 episode series wrapped up production in Canada this past summer before The Suicide Squad even hit theatres. The Peacemaker series is set to explore both the origin of the character along with the missions he undertakes following the events of The Suicide Squad. John Cena, who will also serve as a co-executive producer for the series, seems to have a great attachment to the character once saying “The Peacemaker is an interesting character because his ego seems contradictory.”

The series will also star Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Steve Agee as prison warden John Economos, Robert Patrick as Peacemaker’s father Auggie Smith, Jennifer Holland as NSA agent Emilia Harcourt, and Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase, who is also known as the hero Vigilante. While every episode of the series was written by James Gunn himself, only five will be directed by the filmmaker while Judy Hill, Rosemary Rodriguez, and Brad Anderson tackle the other three. John Cena will return with the Peacemaker on January 13, 2022.
