In only a couple of more months, John Cena’s Peacemaker series will finally release on HBO Max for streaming. Now, we’re getting an early look at the show in a newly released scene, where his character lets his feelings about Aquaman be known. The new scene picks up with the character still in the hospital, where he was last seen at the end of The Suicide Squad.

Peacemaker is set to have eight episodes. All of them were written by James Gunn, and five of them are directed by him as well. James Gunn is also responsible for The Suicide Squad, where audiences first met John Cena’s character. He’s also the filmmaker behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The above scene ends by reminding us of some of John Cena’s lines in The Suicide Squad, telling audiences that he doesn’t care who he has to kill in order to make peace possible. It also shows off that DC’s Peacemaker has something important in common with Marvel’s Star-Lord, also known as Peter Quill.

In Guardians of the Galaxy, Chris Pratt’s character has a running gag in the movies where he introduces himself as Star-Lord and no one knows who he is talking about. Based on the above scene from Peacemaker, it appears that John Cena’s character may have the same running gag for DC. The hospital janitor has never heard of Peacemaker, mocks the hero title, and goes one step further by saying that Aquaman is a real hero. Jason Momoa’s Aquaman is unlikely to be seen in Peacemaker, but the nod toward his character is a pretty great way to tie Peacemaker into the wider DC Extended Universe nonetheless.

This scene also shows John Cena’s Peacemaker ripping on another superhero, which appears to be another gag that fans can expect from the new series. The show has an official Twitter account where Peacemaker shares his thoughts on social media. The account has been giving fans a look at what kinds of things they can expect from the new series. It appears to also be introducing some of the character’s tone and ongoing jokes. For example, a few months ago, he tweeted out jokes about Superman, and how John Cena’s character is obviously a more dedicated hero. It seems that no DC character will be safe.

The Suicide Squad was released in August of 2021. It introduced John Cena as Peacemaker in a few funny lines. However, the large ensemble cast meant that none of the characters took center stage for too long. Only a little is known about what fans can expect from the eight-episode series for HBO Max. The above scene indicates that it won’t be a prequel story. Instead, the show should be picking up with John Cena still in the hospital recovering from the end of The Suicide Squad. At the end of the movie, John Cena had a confrontation with the other characters, landing him in the hospital. Fans will be able to see what happens next for Peacemaker when the new series lands on HBO Max for streaming in January 2022.
