Fans who have been patiently waiting for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to release, will be happy to know that a final trailer has just dropped. While most of the trailers that preceded it showcased more about Sonic, duh, the final trailer is more center-focused around the villains of the new sequel. Knuckles has certainly received plenty of trailer time as well, but this time we get to see a much more powerful Jim Carrey and his portrayal of Dr. Robotnik. It seems that Robotnik aims to use an emerald to increase his own power. You can see the final trailer below:
The first Sonic film saw Dr. Robotnik stuck in another land due to the rings being used to cast him away from Earth, but now the mad scientist is back. On top of bringing along Knuckles, who plans to fight Sonic at every turn, Robotnik has also found the green emerald. Fans of the video game series know that once all the emeralds are collected, Sonic then turns into Super Sonic. While that might not be what is happening in the sequel, it appears that could be what is going on for future films and possibly the Knuckles spin-off show. However, the above trailer shows Robotnik (Jim Carrey) turning green and powerful with the usage of the emerald’s power. There is a point in the trailer where his coat changes to black, but his eyes and aura glow while he seems to be ripping metal apart via a tornado he created using green lightning.
Another thing of note is that we finally get to see a much better look at the giant robotic mech that Dr. Robotnik seems to control in the film. Robotnik has always controlled some sort of mechanical nightmare during the boss fights in the Sonic video games, so it’s great to see a much better look at what he is controlling in the new sequel. The giant robot also bears a striking resemblance to the classic Robotnik that we all know from the classic Sega video games. They couldn’t have cast someone more perfect than Jim Carrey to take on the role of the most villainous mad scientist. It truly works well. It might be because of his acting skills in that he can always portray himself as a zany character, but this time we get to see what the man can do with the power of an emerald.
On top of being one of the most favorite game franchises, Sonic has proven to be one of the more successful video game adaptations ever made. The initial film has a 63% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but a much more impressive audience rating of 93%. Audiences loved the film. That, and the film pulled in $319 million worldwide at the box office. Now Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has smartly brought back Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, and James Marsden. However, they also cast Idris Elba as the evil Knuckles. This star-studded cast is sure to be even more successful the second time around. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 premieres in theaters on April 8th.
