ABC has renewed David E. Kelley’s crime drama Big Sky for a third season. Based on The Highway series of books by C. J. Box, the season two finale saw Jensen Ackles step in as the town’s temporary sheriff as a favor to a friend. Now Beau Arlen, who’s described as a confident and charming good boy from Texas, has been bumped up to a season regular. According to Deadline, the Supernatural star signed a one-year deal with the network and will appear in every episode of the new season.

Jensen Ackles took to social media to celebrate his new role with fans. In a post on Instagram, he wrote, “There is literally a new sheriff in town. Who apparently is always trying to close his shirt and/or jacket. Figure it out, man!” As expected, the comments section was filled with congratulatory messages from his followers, who likened the new gig to his former Supernatural co-star’s role on Walker. Check out Jensen Ackles’ post about Big Sky below:

Drawing a comparison was inevitable since Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki worked together for years on the hit CW series. The duo starred as brothers, Dean and Sam Winchester who are tasked with hunting demons, ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural beings. After helping their father track down the demon that killed their mother and Sam’s girlfriend, they use their father’s journal to help them carry on the family business. Supernatural premiered in September 2005 and ran for 15 seasons. During its run, the show received a mixed reception from critics. But fans loved tuning in for the Winchester’s adventures, and the series gained somewhat of a cult following.

After Supernatural ended, Jensen Ackles’ costar was cast as Cordell Walker in a reboot of the 1990s cult favorite – Walker, Texas RangerWalker is a re-imagining of the original series and stars Jared Padalecki as a grieving single father of two teenagers with his own moral code. After being undercover for two years, Walker returns to Texas where he discovers that the real work needs to be done at home. Throughout the series, he attempts to reconnect with his creative and thoughtful son and his headstrong, rebellious daughter, while navigating clashes with his family.

Meanwhile, Jensen Ackles’ Beau Arlen will have his hands full in the new season of Big Sky. While the plot details for the new installment aren’t very clear, season three will feature more of Jamie-Lynn Siegler who was promoted to series regular as well. Country music legend Reba McEntire will also be joining the cast as Sunny Brick – head of the Brick family and its highly successful backcountry outfitting company. As an added twist, the business just happens to have a dark secret in its history, TV Line reports.

If his job card wasn’t already stacked, Jensen Ackles will be narrating the Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters which recently received a season ordered at The CW. The story focuses on Sam and Dean’s parents, John and Mary. The Big Sky star will also be serving as an executive producer for the brand new series.
