If you’ve been sweating in anticipation for the Jason Statham starring film, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, you’re going to need to wait a little bit longer – or maybe even a lot longer. It looks like the Guy Ritchie directed film has seemingly vanished from the docket all together. Like many productions from the Covid era, including Morbius and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the high action film’s release date has been put on ice. Initially eying a drop during January 2022, followers were let down when the feature was pushed back to March 18. However, after doing some digging on STXfilms’ website, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre’s debut date has done a disappearing act and is now listed as “unset” and “coming soon.”

It’s hard to say why the movie is facing down another delay. It could be something wacky going on behind the scenes that needs to be fixed, a pandemic related problem, or it could feel threatened by another movie being released in March. On March 4, Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated The Batman will hit screens everywhere. With in person ticket sales still recovering from the ongoing pandemic, it could be that the studio wants to hold off on the Ritchie helmed flick in hopes of bringing in bigger box office numbers down the road. If this is the case, we can’t blame Miramax and STXfilms for wanting to put the kibosh on a March release date. Following the success of Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, crushing box offices around the globe, stacking anything up against a superhero flick right now is a risky move. Even with the star power behind Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, which along with Jason Statham includes Aubrey Plaza, Josh Hartnett, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone, Hugh Grant, Lourdes Faberes, Max Beesley, Eddie Marsan, and Kaan Urgancioglu, it would be questionable to presume that it could compete with the likes of the caped crusader.

It’s especially a bummer to hear the news surrounding Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre as the plot sounds like a non-stop thrill ride with laughs to match. Jason Statham stars as the world’s top spy, Orson Fortune. Fortune is sent on an assignment to find and put an end to the work being carried out by evil billionaire, Greg Simmonds (Grant). Simmonds is the creator of an Earth crushing weapon based technology, which he intends to sell to the highest bidder. Though the task may seem daunting, Fortune, who prefers to work alone, has been given a crack team of fellow spies (Plaza, Elwes, Malone) to help him complete the mission. Rounding out the crew to put an end to Simmonds’ reign of terror, the group phones in Hollywood’s top actor, Danny Francesco (Hartnett).

While the plot sounds absolutely dynamite and Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, et. al are bound to cause rib busting laughter, it makes sense why the studios behind the feature would think twice about a March release date. Since they do have an A-list cast, they’re most likely thinking they’ll be able to pack the seats, but only if the competition of The Batman is at bay. Whatever the reason may be for the pause in the premiere, we hope that Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre gets its day in the sun sooner rather than later.
