Everyone is patiently waiting for the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special to drop on Disney+, which is set to happen tomorrow. However, the new MCU entry is set to make franchise history, as it is the first Marvel property without a villain. That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as the special is only 44 minutes long, which would mean it would have been hard to build the complexity of villains that Marvel is known for.

James Gunn revealed the revelation about the new Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special in an interview with Variety. According to Gunn. “Before I wrote the screenplay, I wrote a treatment, and in the treatment, there was this other threat…but the threat didn’t interest me at all…So I just cut that out and made it a story about people.”

That’s certainly not a bad way of approaching a holiday-based special, especially considering the trailer has shown the goofier side of the MCU. Though it was not as advertised, Werewolf by Night was fantastic, simply because it went against what Marvel has produced so far. Though the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is bringing back very familiar characters, to have them interact in a new way is something that alleviates some of the superhero fatigue that fans are feeling.

The new Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is meant to be an important MCU feature, as it holds important subject matter for Phase 5 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as Gunn has already stated. In fact, Marvel may have already committed their own spoilers, as some news about Mantis dropped early on Disney+. That information was pulled already, but not before the internet sleuths got their hands on it, including us, which you can read about here.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special early reviews are also stating how charming and fun the special is, which is always something great to have around the holidays when surrounded by family. Everyone can bask in the chaos of Drax, Mantis, and Kevin Bacon, as the trailer has led us to believe. There is no need to bring in some crazy threat that the team will have to defeat.

That’s not to say that we wouldn’t appreciate seeing a new character make a big cameo in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, but we certainly don’t need that character to be fully shown, as 44 minutes is not a long time to work with. A post-credits scene will do just fine or seeing any new characters appear towards the end of the Christmas fun. Either way, we are more than excited to see this new Marvel special.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special officially debuts tomorrow on Disney+, and everyone can see what the team has been up to since Thor: Love and Thunder. The new special brings back everyone’s favorite ragtag superhero team in a new adventure that looks to be like a ton of fun, especially when Drax and Mantis go chasing down Kevin Bacon. We just can’t wait to see the holiday fun and see one of the last movies that James Gunn has directed, as the man has now jumped ship and is running things over at DC as co-CEO of the DC Films division.
