Max Honors Matthew Perry With An Opening Tribute

As many of our readers will already know, Friends star Matthew Perry tragically passed away at his home in Los Angeles on Friday. The actor was 54 years old and law enforcement almost immediately ruled out foul play. Known globally as being one of six besties in the beloved sitcom Friends, in which he played the role of Chandler Bing, Perry’s character was known for his wit and comedic hijinks as well as his relationship with Courteney Cox’s Monica Gellar.

Away From Friends, Perry Built A Career In TV And Film

Beyond his television appearance in Friends, Matthew Perry was also featured in timeless favorites including Ally McBeal, The West Wing, The Ron Clark Story, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Just last year, Matthew Perry released a memoir titled, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, in which he not only reflected on his time in Hollywood but also opened up about his struggle with alcohol and drugs. As he revealed in the book, Matthew Perry would roll onto the set of Friends with painful hangovers but was still able to perform to his top ability without the rest of the cast and crew noticing. Following a jet-ski accident in the late ‘90s, Perry became addicted to Vicodin, which would be the beginning of his tango with painkillers.

Over the next two decades, the Friends star would have an ongoing battle with prescription meds and alcohol, checking in and out of rehab centers. Facing death in 2018, Matthew Perry had a 2 percent chance of survival after his colon burst. Eventually, the actor would use his toughest moments as a platform to spread the word about addiction and put a very familiar face on the disease, letting others know that they weren’t alone.

Matthew Perry Was A Part Of The Friends Reunion Special

In 2021, the entire leading cast of Friends got together for a special titled, Friends: The Reunion, putting the stars on stage together for the first time in two decades. Taking a walk down memory lane, the actors, which included Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc, went back to the familiar sets and re-lived some of their favorite moments. This would be the final time that Matthew Perry would appear on-screen prior to his death.
