Ewan McGregor is making a rather unlikely return to the Star Wars universe in that, at the time, it didn’t seem all that possible that we’d ever get more stories from the previous timeline of the franchise. It just wasn’t how movies were done and when he was last seen in Revenge of the Sith, we lived in a time well before the proliferation of television series on streaming platforms. But he’s coming back as Obi-Wan Kenobi and it’s setting up to be an awesome story. And now, according to The Direct, we are getting a sense of who some of the antagonists will be in the series. It looks like he’s going to be facing off against some of Darth Vader’s Inquisitors on the program.

This latest rumor about different characters who will appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi is very much just that at this point, only a rumor. But the idea that Ewan McGregor would face off against Inquisitors would line up nearly perfectly for this show’s purported timeline as well as what we know about the state of the Empire during this time. Because the show is set to pick up after the events of Revenge of the Sith, we know Kenobi is living in a galaxy in which Jedis have been all but eradicated, but some did switch over to the Dark Side before being completely wiped off the face of the universe.

The Inquisitors have taken a couple of different forms in other Star Wars projects, but they are essentially those who had some grasp of the Force or were Jedis in training around the time that the Order 66 went out to get rid of all known Jedis. This move by Emperor Palpatine was meant to consolidate power entirely around the Sith and these Inquisitors were brought over to the Dark Side to use as essentially agents to Darth Vader. They would help root out the remaining Jedi as well as stabilize power around the Sith. They are fighters, nicknamed the Red Blades, for their lightsaber use and are controlled by Darth Vader. In this sense, they make nearly perfect adversaries for Ewan McGregor in the show.

Who plays these Inquisitors, if that’s who they end up being, isn’t known at this point. The cast for Obi-Wan Kenobi isn’t completely set in stone though we do know how some of it shakes out. Joining Ewan McGregor on Tatooine will be Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse who play farmers. But there’s also Indira Varma, Kumail Nanjiani, Moses Ingram, and O’Shea Jackson among others who’ve been hired but have undefined roles at this point. Could one or more of them be the Inquisitors?

There are still a lot of questions about how this Ewan Mcgregor return to Star Wars will shake out. We do know, along with those other mentioned cast members, that Hayden Christensen’s Darth Vader is definitely involved, making the Inquisitors storyline and casting even that much more likely. Obi-Wan will need other Force-related folks around for the challenge and it’s likely that they are on the hunt for even Luke himself during these years. Part of that group’s role was to track down “Force-sensitive” kids and who does that better describe than young Skywalker.

Ewan McGregor and company are already filming Obi-Wan Kenobi now and the series is set to release sometime next year on Disney+.
