Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are one of the more notoriously private Hollywood couples. Even when they first began dating back in 2011, they didn’t share much about their personal lives. So, imagine the surprise that went through Tinsel Town when their first child, Esmeralda Amada Gosling, was born in 2014.

Truth be told, there is very little known (and rightfully so) about the daughter of Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes. Esmeralda Amada Gosling was born on September 12, 2014 in Santa Monica, CA.
Although her father is one of the most popular actors on the planet, and her mother was once one as well, Esmeralda Amada Gosling is being raised in a loving home and shielded from prying eyes.
EVA MENDES ORIGINALLY HID THAT SHE WAS PREGNANT WITH ESMERALDA AMADA GOSLING
Rumors began to swirl around Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes back in January 2014 that Mendes was pregnant. Mendes apparently put those rumors to rest when she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in February 2014 claiming that the rumors were “ridiculous” and that she and Gosling were not expecting.
She told Ellen, “It all started because I didn’t want to go through the scanners at the airport. You know those X-ray scanners, which are really creepy? They basically see you naked, right? And not only that, but there’s a radiation aspect to it, so I always opt out.”
But it would get more and more difficult to hide the baby bump that eventually would become Esmeralda Amada Gosling, though Mendes tried. On one of her last red carpet appearances, Mendes took part in the Violet Grey dinner that honored the late Elizabeth Taylor. There she was strategically hiding the bump.
Her last official red carpet event came a couple of weeks later and it was more apparent that Mendes was hiding the growing Esmeralda Amada Gosling. The clothing she wore had a little more to it around her midsection and she carried a purse or large bag to help hide her pregnancy. Eventually, the rumors became the truth, and Gosling and Mendes finally went public with the pregnancy.
ESMERALDA AMADA GOSLING IS BILINGUAL
The one cool thing that Esmeralda Amada Gosling gets to experience as she is growing up is that she is being raised in a bilingual family. Her mother, Eva Mendes, is Cuban and she still has family in Cuba, where she is hoping to take her family one day. Until that time, though, Mendes says speaking Spanish is a must in the household.
Actually, “Esmeralda mostly speaks Spanglish right now. It’s really cute. She’s definitely bilingual, and it’s really important for us to make sure that she’s not only just familiar with the language, but also with the culture,” Mendes shared with PEOPLE.
“My mom, who lives 15 minutes away, makes it easy because she speaks to the girls in Spanish and cooks them Cuban food. And we’re always listening to Cuban music. It really is a big part of our way of life. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Mendes continued, “My dad, who has been here for 45 years and still doesn’t speak English, is a real asset. It’s so cool because now that I’m trying to make sure that my girls speak Spanish, it’s like, ‘Ok, Dad, take them,’ because I know that all they’re going to speak with him is Spanish.” But does Ryan speak Spanish?

Speaking of family, Esmeralda Amada Gosling is not the only daughter of Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes. The couple didn’t wait long after Esmeralda was born to get right back to it. Less than two years later, Esmeralda Amada Gosling became the big sister to Amada Lee Gosling, who was born at the same hospital in Santa Monica as her older sister.
While you won’t see Esmeralda Amada Gosling or her younger sister on social media, Mendes has taken to her own Instagram account to show off the makeup work they’ve done on her face. Mendes joked in a March 2021 selfie saying, “My kids did this to me. Again. I guess, when in doubt, be their canvas.” Although that picture was nowhere to be found, Mendes did post a picture to her Instagram presenting to her fans the newest makeup job given to her by her daughters.
AMADA WAS EVA MENDES’S GRANDMOTHER’S NAME
You may have noticed that Gosling and Mendes’ first daughter, Esmeralda, has the middle name of Amada. You may also have noticed that their second daughter is actually called Amada. So, where does that name come from?
Back in 2014, shortly after Esmeralda was born, Mendes explained the meaning behind the name. She said that Amada was her grandmother’s name. The name Amada means “beloved” in Spanish.
EVA MENDES STOPPED ACTING AFTER SHE BECAME A MOTHER
Eva Mendes began her acting career in 1996 when she first appeared in a Pet Shop Boys music video, then followed that up by appearing in an Aerosmith music video. From there, her career took off. Urban Legends: Final Cut, All About the Benjamins, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Hitch, We Own the Night, and The Other Guys are just a few of the popular films Mendes has starred in.
This all changed when Mendes had Esmeralda Amada Gosling. In 2014, Mendes made her last feature film, starring in Ryan Gosling’s writing and directing debut, Lost River. Mendes made the choice to become a full-time mom, though she hasn’t stepped away completely from the spotlight.
Mendes may have stopped acting, but her business ventures continue on. She has a partnership with New York & Co. where she designs plus-size clothing and she is co-owner of SKURA Style, a brand of cleaning sponges. As for a return to acting, Mendes says if it is the right project, she may do it.
“Before kids, I kind of was up for anything — I mean, if it was a fun project,” Mendes said. “[Now] I have such a short list of what I will do.” Apparently, Disney is her perfect match.
Meanwhile, who doesn’t know Esmeralda Amada Gosling’s father, Ryan? Her parents met on the 2011 set of The Place Beyond the Pines, but his career had already been in overdrive by that time. Things only got better for Gosling in the following years and his upcoming film slate looks to be very impressive.
Gosling starred as Ken in the Margot Robbie Barbie film and then he will star in the feature film reboot of the Lee Majors TV series, The Fall Guy which will also star Emily Blunt. After that, Gosling will become one of Universal’s classic monsters when he stars in Wolfman. Gosling definitely remains a busy actor.
ESMERALDA AMADA GOSLING THOUGHT HER FATHER WAS AN ASTRONAUT
Both Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have been very careful in introducing Esmeralda Amada Gosling and her younger sister to their films. In fact, they haven’t really seen any of their films because of the adult content of most of their movies, and they are just beginning to understand that their parents are famous actors. According to Gosling, Esmeralda once thought he was an astronaut.
Gosling was on Jimmy Kimmel Live! when he shared the story about bringing both girls to the set when he was filming First Man, the story about astronaut Neil Armstrong. Apparently, Esmeralda became confused when she saw her father decked out in his astronaut gear. He told Jimmy:
“They came to set and came on this day when I was shooting a launch scene, so I was in the space suit and pretending to launch. I think they think I’m an astronaut,” Ryan explained. “My oldest said the other day — she pointed to the moon and was like, ‘That’s where you work, right?'”
YOU WON’T SEE ESMERALDA AMADA GOSLING ON SOCIAL MEDIA
As we have mentioned previously, both Gosling and Mendes are extremely private when it comes to their personal lives, especially as it concerns their children. For this reason, you won’t see Esmeralda Amada Gosling or Amada Lee on either of their parent’s social media accounts.
The only time you will get a glimpse of them is when they may be going out for ice cream with their father or shopping with their mother; the paparazzi love to take unwanted pictures of them.
Other than that, Esmeralda Amada Gosling’s life is where it should be – private. Maybe someday she will follow in her parents’ footsteps and venture into show business. But until that time, she is just a young girl growing up and enjoying the life her parents are giving her.
