If the rumors are to be believed, then we have not seen the last of Chris Evans in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even though Captain America recently tweeted a simple rebuttal, “News to me”, to Deadline’s story suggesting that Evans would return to the MCU as Captain America, the rumors persist. And it hasn’t stopped fans from dreaming of the possibilities. One such direction would be putting Cap on the evil side. Check out a HYDRA Cap version of the character:

This is, of course, just some fan art speculation. But sometimes when there’s exciting smoke we might see some casting fire. There’s definitely a case to be made for Chris Evans to return, not as Captain America, but as the evil HYDRA Captain America (aka Hydra Supreme). It is said that Evans’ return could come in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which has a whole bunch of wild speculation running on about that film.

Considering it’s dealing with multiverse scenarios, flipping the script on iconic characters isn’t out of the question. Additionally, there is also more rumor working that Captain America will also be part of another story that will see Wolverine’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and have the two heroes square off. Could Chris Evans be the bag guy in this scenario?

Of course, all of this is just begging the question, how does Captain America pick the shield back up? At the end of Avengers: Endgame we saw a very elderly Steve Rogers hand over his shield to a very unwilling Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie). After that, Chris Evans has said on numerous occasions that he was done as Cap. When he was approached about coming back in some form in the new Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier his response was clear as he told Entertainment Tonight via Digital Spy:

“No. No, probably not. Probably not…There was a million ways that that whole tenure with Marvel could’ve gone wrong. And it didn’t. So to stick the landing so well, it would be a shame to revisit, unless there was something very unique that we felt the need to reveal. So for now let’s just be content with how well it ended.”

But many have read into his comments, especially the “so for now” portion. The interview Chris Evans gave Entertainment Tonight can be seen below, and he talks about a Captain America return around the 4:08 minute mark.

Of course, this only continues to fuel the fire of a Chris Evans return, one that makes complete sense. The Marvel Cinematic Universe without Evans (and Robert Downey Jr., for that matter) seems hollow.

Chris Evans played the hell out of Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel, and Avengers: Endgame. He also made an uncredited cameo appearance in Ant-Man. If this was the end of the run, we know he brought it in every film.

Chris Evans stating he was done with Captain America isn’t a new thing. He went on Good Morning America back in 2018 to clarify where he stood playing Captain America in the future. When co-host Michael Strahan said, “You made some headlines recently. You said you were done playing Captain America.” Evans was quick to point out, “Well, the contract’s done. You know, I mean, we…a lot of our contracts are through. Myself, Downey, Hemsworth, we all kinda started well roughly at the same time and I think we all, through Avengers 4, kind of wrap it up.”

So sure, Chris Evans has been pretty firm on his involvement or lack thereof going forward. But could he be talked into a role as an antagonist? Maybe even evil HYDRA agent? I’d be here for it and it would begin to usher in a totally new and different phase of Marvel.
