Chris Evans held the mantle of Captain America for an entire decade since he first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger. His connection with the character helped to solidify him as a pop culture icon. When The Falcon and the Winter Soldier announced that it would be dealing with the legacy of Captain America, many fans knew this meant a new character would be taking on the title of the superhero. As the six episodes have played out on Disney+, everyone has been eagerly anticipating just what we would be seeing when the new Captain America decided to step into the spotlight. And with the series all done, we have our answer.

Chris Evans has been replaced as Captain America by none other than Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. He has abandoned the Falcon moniker and now wears a stars and stripes outfit courtesy of the good tailors of Wakanda. We got a peek at the new costume yesterday but now you can see it in all its glory. Watch the new Captain America make his heroic entrance in this video:

Still can’t get enough of Chris Evans’ replacement? How about a few more shots of Anthony Mackie flexing that suit and the iconic shield? This moment from the finale is definitely one for the record books:

There is no doubt that Anthony Mackie cuts a striking figure in the extremely vibrant new outfit. Even Chris Evans never wore something quite this flamboyant. However, it definitely strikes a chord as a visual statement and announces a very new Captain America to the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The outfit is purposefully bold as if to reflect the story’s bold choice to make a Black man the new symbol of American exceptionalism in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a piece of the thematic framework of the series and the larger world these characters inhabit, it is a definite success.

And if it was not clear that Marvel is committing to Anthony Mackie taking over for Chris Evans, the credits of the finale even change the title of the show to Captain America and the Winter Soldier. We have to wonder if the plan is to come back for a second season on Disney+ but carry on with this new title in place. If so, it looks like we can plan on seeing a whole lot more of Anthony Mackie’s new Captain America suit. We wonder if it will undergo a redesign in the same way that the Chris Evans version of the character ended up wearing different versions of the costume.

The future certainly looks bright for Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America. Exactly how his character will be utilized in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains to be seen, but he seems more than up to the task of taking over for Chris Evans. Will he only be in the Disney+ series or can we expect him to show up in one of the many movies slated to come out over the next few years? No matter where he ends up, we look forward to seeing those stars and stripes taking to the sky.
