A Sexy Cameron Diaz Crime Drama Is Dominating Streaming
Cameron Diaz has returned to acting which has bolstered one of her exciting crime drama films, which is The Counselor.
Cameron Diaz is going through a bit of a revival. That might be because the actress is finally coming out of retirement. Jamie Foxx had announced Diaz would be joining him in a new action film for Netflix that is aptly titled, Back in Action. We also reported that the actress is being targeted for a role within the MCU. Her revival includes having not one, but two, different movies dominating the streaming charts. One of her last films, The Other Woman, is currently in the top 10 on HBO Max. Joining that film is a more sultry selection directed by famed director Ridley Scott called, The Counselor.
The Counselor came out in 2013, so it was still during the time in which Cameron Diaz was heavily involved in the film business. However, the film was critically panned and mostly not welcomed by audiences either. The Counselor has a meager rating of 34% from the critic side on Rotten Tomatoes, and the 23% audience rating is not much better. However, it has nearly been a decade since the film graced our screens, and fans are watching it in droves currently. The film made $75 million against a budget of $20 million, which can still be seen as a nominal monetary success. The odd thing is that this film boasts a hugely impressive cast, but the critique was the cast did not help the thriller and suspense movie have enough moments of thrill and suspense. Cameron Diaz doesn’t have that many misses, but certainly seems to be one of them.
The Counselor follows a man that goes by The Counselor (Michael Fassbender) as he is being intimate with his girlfriend, Laura (Penelope Cruz). He then flies the pair to Amsterdam, where he meets a diamond dealer to find the ring to propose to Laura with. He flies back to Texas where he meets Reiner (Javier Bardem) and Malkina (Cameron Diaz), as The Counselor is going to be doing his first drug deal with Reiner. The Counselor then meets with Westray (Brad Pitt), who tells The Counselor of the dangers of getting mixed in with the Mexican cartel. He explains the investment is hugely beneficial, but if something goes wrong, it will not end well for The Counselor. While discussing the drug deal, Malinka hears enough to enact her own plan to steal the drugs away from the deal between The Counselor and Reiner. Naturally, things go badly very quickly. Without ruining the rest of the movie, and giving everyone an idea of the plot, fans can go watch the movies right now on HBO Max.
The Counselor has a massive cast that includes the previously mentioned Cameron Diaz, Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Rosie Perez, Natalie Dormer, Dean Norris, John Leguizamo, and many more. Ridley Scott also happens to be one of the most respected directors in the business, so it sounds as if this film didn’t quite come together in the way that it should have. Well, at least when it was released back in 2013. It is currently bringing in a ton of audience viewership on HBO Max currently. This film could have been what led to Diaz retiring, as it was one of the final four films that she appeared in before retiring in 2014.
What should have made this film much more special is that Cormac McCarthy wrote the screenplay. The man is arguably one of the best novelists from the United States. He famously wrote novels like All the Pretty Horses, No Country for Old Men, and The Road. All of which have been adapted into films. With star power that included Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt, and Penelope Cruz, a hugely famous director, and a legendary novelist, the film had every ingredient to be a success. Sadly, it didn’t seem to be. Both Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem would go on to be in more than one Cormac McCarthy adaptation.
Cameron Diaz may have left acting behind shortly after The Counselor had come out, but she is seeing plenty of renewed attention. Again, it could be because everyone is excited that she is returning to acting. Anyone who happens to be a fan of the woman can go view The Counselor on HBO Max right now. Maybe the critics were a bit too harsh about this movie.
