Anthony Mackie has had such a crazy cool arc through the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Sam Wilson, essentially crossing running paths with Steve Rogers/ Captain America early on and then parlaying his character’s skills and bravery into a full-time role with the Avengers. And the role has only expanded over the years and movies with Wilson eventually taking the shield and mantle at the end of Endgame. And when that happened we knew we’d probably need to get a new Falcon at some point. It looks like that day has come with insider Daniel Richtman reporting that Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres will be taking over as Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is very cool, though not completely unexpected news for the franchise.

It was pretty much assumed that Anthony Mackie wouldn’t stay in the Falcon suit for long considering his role was set to expand after he’d been handed over the Captain America shield from Rogers. But it hasn’t been totally clear about how or when this would happen. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is exploring that question and transition (so to speak) as we speak with its episodes. But there was some speculation after the first episode that Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres had a bigger role to play as Wilson’s proverbial wingman going forward. And that he wouldn’t be confined to a ground role for long.

This news from Richtman that Torres will take over the Falcon role from Anthony Mackie does follow some comic book background as well. The Torres character was first introduced in 2015 as a young Mexican teenager who had been kidnapped by a secret supervillain group the Sons of the Serpent. In the story, Wilson has already taken over the Captain America duties and he rescues Torres but not before the latter had been experimented on. The story does end with Torres becoming Falcon, though the story is much different than what we are presented in the current show.

That being said, not all comic book timelines need to run parallel or be congruent with what we see on screen. In this case, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson already has a relationship with Ramirez’s Torres and it will likely come out in future episodes about how he ends up earning the right to take over as Falcon. There could be some similar machinations to the comic books, or he could simply “prove himself” a la what Wilson did with Rogers in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Whatever the story, we now know that Danny Ramirez will take over for Anthony Mackie as Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And this follows the continued torch-passing with characters within the universe. It happened with Rogers-to-Wilson as Captain America, but we are also set to get new versions of Hawkeye and Black Widow as well. Heck, there’s also going to be a new Black Panther, though that’s for different reasons. This is part of the universe expanding and moving on from the original characters.
