The Spanish-language series La Máquina has added an up-and-coming actress. According to Variety, Eiza Gonzalez has joined the series, which also stars Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal. The series was picked up by Hulu last July. According to reports, the series will follow an aging boxer whose manager secures him one last fight. However, in order to make it to the fight, they must survive the treacherous underworld. Luna and Bernal are set to produce the series under their La Corriente del Gofo banner.

According to the report, Eiza Gonzales will play a character named Irasema. Her character is described as an inspiring sports journalist who “approaches boxing as more of an art form.” The report notes that Irasema is the ex-wife of Bernal’s character Esteban and has known him and Luna’s character Andy “since they were teenagers.” The project won’t be the first time Luna and Bernal have worked together on. The two have appeared together onscreen in the critically-acclaimed film Y tu mamá también. Directed by Alfonso Cuaron, the film tells the story of two teenagers who take a road trip with a woman in her late twenties. The film was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards and Best Foreign Language film at the Golden Globes. After appearing together in that, Luna and Bernal would go on to work together on numerous other projects.

Eiza Gonzales in Ambulance (2022)

Eiza Gonzales is an actress currently on the rise in Hollywood. She recently appeared in the Michael Bay action film Ambulance alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Filmgoers would probably remember her from her breakout role in Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, in which she played the character named Darling. Outside of her acting work, Gonzales is a spokesperson for numerous skincare and cosmetic brands, including Avon, Asepxia, and the ambassador for Neutrogena. Gonzales has also appeared in other major blockbuster projects, including Hobbs & Shaw, Alita: Battle Angel, and Godzilla vs. Kong. She initially gained popularity for her debut role in the Mexican musical telenovela Lola, érase una vez. In addition to her role in the upcoming Hulu series, Gonzales will also star in the Netflix adaption of The Three-Body Problem.

No other details were given as to when the new series will hit the streamer. Diego has a few projects coming down the pipeline, including reprising his role as Andor in the upcoming Disney+ series. Regarding Eiza Gonzales’ character, the approach of focusing on a female sports journalist is a fascinating one considering Hollywood doesn’t often spotlight them. La Máquina is coming after Hulu’s other boxing-centric series Mike, which centers on the rise of legendary boxer Mike Tyson. A lot of discussion regarding the series is about what’s factual and what is just made up. Luckily for La Máquina, the creators don’t have to worry about making sure the story aligns with something that happened in real life. Perhaps what the series has to offer is a new perspective on the world of boxing and a story worth keeping up with week to week. Hopefully, La Máquina can tell a well-crafted story with the heart and soul of the original Rocky film.
