DC Films recently announced their plans to expand the amount of DC content recently, planning to release at least four films in theaters per year, with lesser-known characters getting their own films on HBO Max. In this interview with DC Films president Walter Hamada, he said that “With every movie that we’re looking at now, we are thinking, ‘What’s the potential spinoff?’” For Aquaman, it seems as though we might already have that answer, as a new rumor states Amber Heard’s Hera might be getting her own HBO Max series.

The rumor comes from gossip writer Daniel Richtman on his Patreon, with little more information than that there have been talks of a series centered around Amber Heard’s Mera. While it’s certainly possible that this could be the case, there are a few reasons to be skeptical about this potential rumor.

The first, Amber Heard has been the center of plenty of rumors over the last year in the wake of her legal battles with ex-husband Johnny Depp. This had led to a slew of rumors – many from Richtman as well – predicting everything from Amber Heard getting fired from Aquaman to Heard receiving a much larger part in Aquaman. At this point, there are so many rumors around Heard, at least some of them have to be correct due to sheer numbers.

Also, as Hamada states, every film has become the potential for new HBO Max spinoffs. The new streaming service has already seen this to be true, with the announcements of a Peacemaker spinoff coming after The Suicide Squad, and a prequel to The Batman that would follow Bruce Wayne’s first year as the superhero. If Hamada has said that every film has the possibility to receive its own spinoff, then of course it seems likely that a series following the second-most popular character in the Aquaman franchise, Amber Heard’s Hera, has at least been discussed. I’ve discussed that Taika Waititi’s Korg is the most powerful character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with my friends, it doesn’t make it true.

But one rumor that does make sense when it comes to Amber Heard in the DC Extended Universe is that it does seem like DC would want to expand her role in this world. The DC Extended Universe has only a few strong female characters, and as Wonder Woman has proven, female heroes can give the studio some of their biggest box office and best reviews. Beyond Wonder Woman, Amber Heard’s Mera might be the only other major female superhero in the DC Extended Universe, so it would be smart for DC to try to boost that character to the forefront.

At this point, it seems like the DC Extended Universe is about to grow bigger than it ever has before. With tons of films – both theatrical and on streaming services – in the works and multiple TV shows, it seems like DC is taking their cues from Marvel’s playbook right now. Like Marvel, it would make sense that DC might want to build up some of the supporting characters with their own stories, and Amber Heard’s Mera would be a prime choice for her own show. But as for the likelihood based on the sparse details coming from this rumor, it seems like Aquaman fans maybe shouldn’t hold their breath.
