Super Mario 64 Door Opened For First Time In 28 Years

Super Mario 64 is one of the greatest games of all time, and players and speedrunners have explored nearly every nook, cranny, and door in the game since its release. Except for one pesky door in the Cool, Cool, Mountain level that can’t be opened from the outside. That is, until now, as speedrunner Alexpalix1 finally figured out how to get in through this notorious door.

For those who may not remember, this particular Super Mario 64 door is located outside the cabin that you exit after you go down the slide. So, we already know what’s on the other side of the door, but plenty of people were frustrated with the fact that you couldn’t go back in there after exiting.

Alexpalix1 was able to find the answer, and a YouTube video by Pannenkoek2012 explains how the invisible walls found in the game, including the invisible wall that prevents players from opening this particular door, factor into this answer.

Alexpalix1 was able to discover that you can get through this Super Mario 64 door without mods, using a collision glitch.

There are plenty of doors in Super Mario 64, both real and fake, with the real ones allowing you to walk through them and into another room simply, and the fake ones are used by the game developers to hide loading and warping zones. The Cool, Cool Mountain outer cabin door is a fake one, and it doesn’t have a knob on it, so we all should know that means that there’s no going back in. Of course, a little trivial detail like that is never enough to stop determined speedrunners.

Alexpalix1 was able to discover that you can get through this Super Mario 64 door without mods, using a collision glitch. Basically, you get the mother penguin to get close to the hut, like many players who have tried before, and then you have Mario start backflipping. The tricky part is turning Mario around right at the moment before he falls into the door’s hitbox, which allows Mario to briefly levitate and walk in midair.

Getting into the hut on Cool, Cool, Mountain has no speedrunning benefits for Super Mario 64 speedrunners, so this little glitch is just to prove it’s possible.

This is crucial because, in Super Mario 64, Mario has to be on the ground to open a door. This little trick bypasses the invisible wall and allows the player to use Mario’s turn-around animation to walk in midair and finally open this hut that has been closed for 28 years now. If this seems like a ton of work, which it is, the funniest part is that it has no real benefit other than being fun and cool.

And all that’s behind it is an area that you’ve already seen before because it’s just the bottom of the ice slide. Still, it’s cool to see that a game that helped define 3D platforming has more hidden secrets for players and fans all these years later.

Also, as mentioned, this Super Mario 64 door glitch requires no mods. So, if you want to get into the hut yourself, you certainly can do so. Just be prepared to spend some time finessing Mario in there.
