Whether you know him best as a Captain America’s sidekick, as a romancing cannibal, or as the guy Star Wars fans have been clamoring to take over the role of Luke Skywalker, it’s clear that Sebastian Stan is quickly becoming one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood. On Tuesday, the Primetime Emmy nominations were announced and the Hulu mini-series Pam & Tommy has been honored with four noms, including Stan being recognized for his role as Tommy Lee in the show. Sebastian Stan was quick to take to social media to celebrate the nomination, including tagging Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, and now a lot of fans are angry at the Marvel star.

On Tuesday, Stan wrote a lengthy caption to go along with a shot of himself and Lily James from Pam & Tommy. Just as long as an acceptance speech, the caption thanks lots of folks involved with the production including fellow nominees James and Seth Rogen. The part fans take issue with comes toward the end when Stan writes that Pam & Tommy “is about a crime that took place without Consent. It was a crime on privacy, a crime on love, a crime on family, and a crime that we were ALL a culprit of, as media and audience combined, and it’s now more timely than ever.” Sebastian Stan then tags Pamela Anderson and her ex-husband Tommy Lee, saying he hopes the series will, among other things, help us all “re-examine our projections and salacious attitudes” toward the two celebrities. You can see the post below.

As BuzzFeed notes, to a lot of fans from all over social media, it seemed like a cruel irony for Sebastian Stan to talk about consent when the honor he’s receiving is for a series Pamela Anderson did not want to see the light of day. One Reddit user made the argument Stan had taken away the same consent his Instagram post suggests is sacrosanct. You can see that post below.

Reddit users aren’t alone in their view of Sebastian Stan’s supposed mistreatment of Pamela Anderson. Over on Twitter searching “sebastian stan pamela” will win you a very long list of upset fans, including some who see themselves as absolutely unswerving Sebastian Stan stans. You can see examples of their thoughts below.

The mini-series Sebastian Stan and Lily James are being honored for revolves around Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s infamous sex tape which was stolen from their home in 1995 and distributed all over the Internet. After numerous attempts to contact Anderson from cast and crew of Pam & Tommy went unanswered, an unnamed source close to the Baywatch star spoke out, making it clear Anderson wanted nothing to do with the series. “In the ’90s, Pamela’s body was deemed by a judge to be public property,” the source said, referring to the legal battle to stop the recording’s distribution. “There was no question the tape was stolen property, but the court decided it wasn’t private property because her body belonged to the world.” Subsequent reports surfaced that Anderson felt violated and forced to relive the trauma because of Pam & Tommy.

We’ll have to wait and see if, how, and when Sebastian Stan responds to the Pamela Anderson controversy. His next big appearance will be as a con man in the Apple TV+ comedy thriller Sharper. Directed by Benjamin Caron (The Crown) from a script by Brian Gatewood (Superstore) and Alessandro Tanaka (The Sitter), Sharper will also star Julianne Moore (Boogie Nights), John Lithgow (3rd Rock from the Sun), Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), and Briana Middleton (The Tender Bar).
