2021 has been a weird year for many people, but it’s been an especially wild ride for actress and former MMA star Gina Carano. Carano’s year has been mired in controversy, which might explain how she landed at number four on Google’s Top Trending Actors in 2021. She seems to be taking the news in stride though. After the list was released, Gina Carano took to Twitter to post about it. She reposted an article about the list with a caption that simply included her number ranking on the list along with a crying laughing emoji and a shrugging emoji.

It’s fitting that she’s taking to social media to talk about the news since social media has reportedly been what got her in hot water in the first place. Gina Carano’s name is likely ranked so high because she was fired from the extremely popular Disney+ show The Mandalorian after she sent out some controversial social media posts earlier in the year. Before she was fired, she had several other controversial tweets where she made fun of mask-wearing at the height of the pandemic and another where she implied there was voter fraud in the 2020 election.
The straw that broke the camel’s back for Disney is when Gina Carano made a post where she suggested that being a Republican today is similar to being Jewish during the Holocaust. This caused #FireGinaCarano to trend and for Disney to eventually cut ties with her. Not only did this mean that her character wouldn’t be appearing on The Mandalorian anymore (at least not portrayed by Carano), it also took away any chance of her starring in future Star Wars series. Reportedly, there were several series in early stages that would have either starred or co-starred Carano.
Taking a look at the list of trending actors, Gina Carano definitely isn’t the only one who is trending due to controversy. The number one trending actor is Alec Baldwin, who was involved in the tragic accidental on-set shooting and death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Pete Davidson landed at number two, likely because of his high-profile relationship with Kim Kardashian and other high-profile actresses in 2021. Shailene Woodley is at number three, probably because of her relationship with Aaron Rodger, who is currently facing vaccine-related controversy. Armie Hammer follows Gina Carano’s spot because…you don’t want to know. And the rest of the list is rounded out by Jake Gyllenhaal, Dave Chapelle, Bo Burnham, Olivia Wilde, and Dog the Bounty Hunter. It looks like the only person on this list who made it because of their actual work, and not their relationships or their controversies, is Bo Burnham thanks to his incredibly lockdown-relevant Netflix special Inside.
All in all, it seems like Gina Carano is taking the news in stride. Hopefully, next year’s list of top trending actors will be trending because of all the great movies and shows they made instead of controversies surrounding them.
