Ezra Miller has been in and out of the news over the last few years due to erratic behavior and allegations of abuse while also being Warner Bros. Discovery and DC’s only hope for a summer blockbuster with the release of The Flash last June. Now, Miller is trending again, this time with the rumor that the Justice League star has changed their pronouns back to he/him while on a retreat.

According to World of Reel, Ezra Miller chose to change pronouns while spending time with Hebrew rapper, Matisyahu. (For the purpose of this article, until confirmation comes from the actor themselves, we will continue to use they/them pronouns.)After the release of The Flash, Ezra Miller has been keeping a low profile, staying out of public, and spending a lot of time on their goat farm in Vermont. It makes sense that the actor would want to stay out of the public eye following their turbulent reputation. Since 2011, The Perks of Being a Wallflower star has seen their fair share of disturbing headlines.

In June 2011, during the filming of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Ezra Miller was charged with drug possession after 20 grams of marijuana were found in their possession during a traffic stop in Pittsburgh. The charges were later dropped, and Miller faced a $600 penalty for disorderly conduct. Nearly a decade later in April 2020, a video surfaced showing Ezra Miller allegedly choking a woman at a bar in Reykjavík, Iceland. In September 2022, Miller’s representative claimed the incident resulted from a “spontaneous reaction” to taunting by teenagers. In March 2022, Miller faced multiple police calls in Hawaii, culminating in an arrest for disorderly conduct and harassment at a karaoke bar.

DC fans were worried that the controversial news surrounding Ezra Miller would lead to the cancelation of The Flash. The movie for The Scarlet Speedster had been in attempted production since 2004. Having it canceled less than a year from when it was scheduled to be released would have been a tragedy for fans looking forward to the superhero flick. Surprisingly, Warner Bros. stood by Miller, supporting the actor as they figured out treatment for “complex mental health issues.”

The Flash Flops At The Box Office

So, despite Ezra Miller’s controversial headlines, The Flash hit theaters on June 16, 2023. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the box office smash Warner Bros. Discovery hoped it would be. The long-anticipated DC superhero film elicited mixed reviews from critics. Initial assessments lauded its humor, action sequences, and performances, yet drew criticism for the third act and visual effects. The film brought in $270.6 million, countering an estimated budget of $220 million. On Rotten Tomatoes, the Ezra Miller feature holds a 63 percent approval rating, with reviewers commending its humor and fast-paced narrative, positioning it as one of the better recent DC movies.

Does Ezra Miller Have A Future In The New DCU?

Beyond the involvement of Ezra Miller, the film faced its own controversies, including the use of digital imagery to recreate likenesses of deceased actors, prompting ethical debates. Despite the mixed critical reception, The Flash secured nominations at the Golden Trailer Awards and the Saturn Awards, including Best Superhero Film and a Best Supporting Actor nod for Michael Keaton. As for the future of Miller in the DCU, it was reported that most Zack Snyder actors wouldn’t be returning to the DCU, likely ending Miller’s time with the studio.
