It has been some time since we have seen a Christopher Nolan film. The famed director’s last film was 2020’s Tenet. Now he returns with his take on J. Robert Oppenheimer. The man was the scientist who engaged in the Manhattan Project, which was the project that saw the creation of the first atomic bombs. Those bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, thus changing the world. Nolan’s film is aptly titled Oppenheimer, with Cillian Murphy taking the titular role. The teaser showcases a feeling of dread. You can see the trailer below:

Through the trailer, Cillian Murphy is shown in black and white, as there is accompanying narration played in the background. One line is, “the force for which the sun draws its power, has been loosed.” One of the most famous quotes in history comes from Oppenheimer, as he referred to the creation of the atomic bomb as, “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” There is also a countdown indicating the July 2023 release date, and how the man changed the course of history. This is sure to be quite a biopic, especially from the mind of Nolan.

Oppenheimer boasts a massive cast that includes Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Gary Oldman, and Josh Hartnett, just to name a few. The film follows the creation of the atomic bomb, and likely how controversial Oppenheimer became after the dropping of those atomic bombs on Japan. The trailer also indicates that he became the most important man that ever lived after the bomb’s creation too. He is also referred to as the man who moved the earth. That is quite literal, as an atomic bomb caused massive destruction in Japan during WWII. This led to the surrender of the country and essentially brought the end of the war.

So far, Oppenheimer has just released the teaser trailer for the film. Considering we will have to wait until July of next year, it could be a few months before we are able to see the entire full trailer for the film. Also, the film is going to be in black and white, apart from the explosions that have taken place. It makes sense for the film to be shot in black and white, especially considering films of that era were the same way. This is an interesting stylistic choice, but one that has been made before. Memento was shot in the same way and was coincidentally the last film that Nolan distributed through Universal. Warner Bros. typically distributes Nolan films, but disagreements have led to Nolan jumping to Universal for the releases of Oppenheimer.

Christopher Nolan is a visionary that has produced some of the most thought-provoking films in recent memory. Inception and Interstellar are still discussed to this day. Also, he has handled war films before, his most recent being the epic Dunkirk. Now, he is going to show the life of one of the most polarizing figures in American history. We can’t wait to see Oppenheimer on July 21, 2023.
