Pedro Pascal first broke out to audiences in the fourth season of the HBO smash hit series Game of Thrones, where he memorably portrayed the dashing, relentless Oberyn Martell until he had his head cracked open like an overripe melon. He next popped up on the Netflix show Narcos as U.S. DEA agent Javier Peña for the first three seasons, working against the violent, ruthless Medellín Cartel. He reached household name status as the title character of Disney+’s most acclaimed new Star Wars project, The Mandalorian, portraying an unforgiving, resourceful bounty hunter in a wild universe. So when Pedro Pascal revealed that the movie that made him want to be a better man is the 2017 live-action animated comedy film Paddington 2, it does not necessarily jive with his typically grim bonafides. Check it out:

Okay, we admit that we misled you a little bit here. The above video is a clip from Pedro Pascal’s upcoming film with Nicolas Cage, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. In the clip, Pascal is in character as Javi Gutierrez, a billionaire superfan of Cage’s and apparently, a notorious arms dealer under investigation by the CIA. So while it is technically Javi saying that Paddington 2 makes him want to be a better man, we do not actually know those are not also the sentiments of Pedro Pascal himself. In the video, we see Cage (who is playing a sadsack version of himself) chilling with Javi. In the plot of the film, Cage has been hired to make a personal appearance at Javi’s birthday for a much-needed million-dollar payday, only to discover that the potentially dangerous billionaire/superfan is actually a super nice guy that he loves to hang out with. It seems at some point that they discussed what Javi’s favorite movie is (doubtless a Nicolas Cage joint) and his second favorite (the 1920 German Expressionist classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, an actual favorite of the real-life Cage), and the actor demands to know the third. In his uniquely Pedro Pascal way, Javi tells the disbelieving Cage: Paddington 2

While the humor of the situation largely resides in the incongruence of a serious-looking character like Pedro Pascal feeling inspired to be a better man by the sequel to a movie based on a children’s book from the 1950s, Paddington 2 is actually an amazing movie. It grossed nearly a quarter-billion dollars at the box office and currently holds a staggering 99% Critics approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes, which indicates “Fresh” status or “Work of Heartwarming Genius” (the latter is our words). British acting legend Hugh Grant, who starred in Paddington 2 in a rare villainous turn, went so far as to say of the film: “I genuinely believe it may be the best film I’ve ever been in.”

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is arriving in theaters on April 22, and has already garnered some of the best reviews of both Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal’s careers. We can only hope it reaches Paddington 2 levels of greatness.
