Exclusive: Kingsman TV Series In Development
In a new Giant Freakin Robot exclusive, a Kingsman series is currently in development and could be hitting streaming sooner than later
The content wars are only heating up with streaming services now needing to do everything in their respective power to fill the catalog to the brimming point with movies, series, and anything else that will keep users coming back. One way to do that is to take popular movie franchises and turn them into series, thereby extending the original IP for years and years. It’s a solid strategy and one we are seeing employed more and more these days. The latest Giant Freakin Robot exclusive from our trusted and proven source is along those lines with Hulu currently developing a Kingsman series for the streamer.
While details for this proposed Kingsman series are few and far between at this point, it’s easy to see how something like this would shake out on the small screen. There are a number of different ways to take the story. Based on the comic book series of the same name, Kingsman follows the debonair group of elite British operatives who set about foiling massive, world-impacting evil plots, all while looking good doing it. It’s been a sleek and purposefully over-the-top franchise up until this point, something that could translate well to the small screen for an extended story.
A Kingsman series could go a couple of different directions in order to exist within the framework of what we’ve already seen in the movie franchise. For starters, it could be in a timeline that exists somewhere between the events of The King’s Man which takes place around World War I, and the events of the original Kingsman which essentially begins in 1997. That’s a long leash in terms of time and would allow for an extended look at how the titular group operated in the decades following their formation around the turn of the 20th century.
Fitting the story in and around other world events that have impacted the United Kingdom (World War II for instance) or other times would definitely play in series form. And we know that the franchise has had no issue inserting this particular group in and around major events for the sake of the narrative. Heck, The King’s Man presupposes they were there when The Great War really kicked off in earnest, being on hand for the assassination that led to the conflict. One wouldn’t suspect they’d have an issue doing it again with a Kingsman series.
There is another planned Kingsman series also in the works right now as well. That’s going to be around the United States counterpart to this group, the Statesman. Introduced in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, we know that group has a much different way of operating, not nearly as high on the stately fashion tip as their British side. When you operate out of a bourbon distillery, the suits go out the door. The expectation is that this Kingsman series is in addition to what is planned for the Statesman.
The first two movies in the Kingsman franchise did well at the box office, totaling more than $824 million in all. The Taron Egerton-led movies played stylistically with the great Matthew Vaughn at the helm. While the second dropped off a bit on the critical side (51% compared to 75% on Rotten Tomatoes), the action and laughs were mostly there in a movie that definitely expanded the world.
We will have to wait for more information on this Kingsman series though one can see how something like this could definitely be a hit for Hulu when released. The story and characters do bring a wealth of options for the small screen and the tone could play just right.
