With as many popular series as Netflix now boasts, not everything can stick around. Now, it looks like another well-loved series — the Mindy Kaling co-created teen dramedy Never Have I Ever — is coming to an end. But, the good news is the series is getting a fourth and final season to finish up its story.

The news comes from Deadline, who said on Tuesday that Never Have I Ever had been renewed for its fourth and final season. The third season recently wrapped production and is set to stream on Netflix this summer, though a precise date hasn’t yet been revealed. In season 2, which dropped on the streamer last summer, much of the drama revolved around the lead Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) not being able to choose whether to date Paxton (Darren Barnet) or Ben (Jaren Lewison). She eventually decides to date both at the same time, which always works out well.

Never Have I Ever first hit Netflix in April 2020 to great streaming numbers and even better reviews. Rotten Tomatoes‘ aggregate score gives the teen dramedy a 95% score from critics and an 87% from audiences. The general consensus seems to be that the series is smart, honest, charming, and absolutely hilarious.

Without revealing any details for either this year’s third season or the final episodes, Never Have I Ever co-creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) released a brief joint statement on Twitter today. Among other things, they wrote, “We can’t wait to reveal all the steamy romance and hilarious adventures we have in store for you. Thanks to all our fans for your support.” You can see the tweet below.

Never Have I Ever has done a lot to boost the profile of its lead, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. Since showing up on the Netflix series, Ramakrishnan has become a hotly sought after voice actor. She’ll be playing the main character’s deadpan friend Priya in this week’s Pixar release Turning Red, as well as Zipp Storm — one of the main characters of the upcoming series My Little Pony: Make Your Mark.

THR reports that Ramakrishnan’s value on Never Have I Ever has been recognized as well. The lead’s per-episode rate went from $21,000 from the first season to $26,250 for season 2. The young actor also earned a $100,ooo bonus after season 1.

It does seem like not exactly suspicious timing but at least interesting timing for the announcement that the series is ending, considering Mindy Kaling came under fire last month for some behavior on a series other than Never Have I Ever. A 2016 clip from Late Night with Conan O’Brien resurfaced which, in light of the #MeToo movement, did not paint the former The Office actor in a flattering light. In the clip, Kaling tells a story about kissing Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy) without warning on the set of her Fox series The Mindy Project. Pace apparently didn’t return Kaling’s affections, and afterward her co-stars – technically her employees when it comes to The Mindy Project – told her what she did was inappropriate. She said she responded by warning them, “tell anyone and you’re fired.” While the story was played for laughs, social media took it slightly differently.
