Keanu Reeves has his name attached to some incredibly memorable characters in pop culture: Neo from The Matrix franchise, Ted “Theodore” Logan from the Bill & Ted series, and John Wick from… well, the John Wick films. And now, Marvel is hoping to attract the celebrated actor to play the vigilante Moon Knight.

A recent rumor has reignited the fervor around Keanu Reeves potentially taking on the role of Marc Spector a.k.a. Moon Knight. It has even led to artist spdrmnkyxxiii – we’re guessing that’s pronounced “Spider Monkey 23” – coming up with their own take on the potential casting.

Keanu Reeves is no stranger to the world of comic book cinema. His role as John Constantine in Constantine has finally begun to get the praise it deserves. Could Reeves fit in with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe mold? A more important and telling question would be: does Moon Knight fit in with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe mold?

Moon Knight would definitely align with some of the darker characters Keanu Reeves has portrayed in the past. The character suffers from multiple personalities and has a spooky supernatural connection to the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Moon Knight is also something of a masochist as the copycat villain Taskmaster once said that he would not copy Moon Knight’s fighting technique because Moon Knight would “rather take a punch than block it.”

Suffice to say, Moon Knight is one of the more R-rated characters in the Marvel canon, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe has mostly strayed towards PG-13 equivalent fare. Granted, the Netflix Marvel shows were decidedly adult. Could Keanu Reeves as Moon Knight usher in a new phase for more adult-targeted projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Or would Moon Knight have his edges sanded off a little so that he could better click with the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe?

The rumor is that Disney+ wants to make Moon Knight and it is tough to see an R-rated type series on that platform. Plus, Keanu Reeves already has his deeply violent original action franchise locked down with the John Wick movies. Would he even be interested in the role? As far as we can tell, if Disney/Marvel does want Reeves, he has not shown any definitive sign of also wanting to take on the role. There is no argument that he’d be a bad fit for it, but maybe it just isn’t the project he is looking for at this point in his career.

If Moon Knight does end up manifesting and Keanu Reeves gets the role, we are completely on board for whatever shape that project takes. And if Moon Knight ends up happening without Reeves? We will still be interested in what could be done with the character’s first live-action incarnation. Either way, we look forward to the day that Moon Knight shows up in our Disney+ queue, no matter who is in the leading role.
