See The Serenity Crew Replaced By The Avengers

Those Browncoats sure are an inventive bunch. Now one of them has taken the cast of The Avengers and inserted them into the framework of another Joss Whedon creation, Firefly. This new video presents Marvel’s iconic superheroes through the intro to Whedon’s short-lived, much-beloved space western. It’s a damn fine way to spend fifty-four seconds, and will probably make you want to watch both Firefly and The Avengers.

This mashup makes a certain amount of sense. When you think about it The Avengers does fit into a western archetype. A bunch of ornery, reluctant heroes are compelled to join forces in order to stop a power-hungry villain. Sounds like a cowboy movie to me. Sure Loki’s out to conquer the entire planet (and beyond), not just take over a small mining town or run some nice folks off of a homestead, but he’s got a posse of ugly, no good goons at his back. Just imagine the climactic battle in The Avengers taking place at high noon in the middle of some rundown settlement instead of the streets of New York City.

This is pretty clever, but do you think the order Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are introduced equates them with a particular Serenity crewmember? Does that mean that Captain America is Mal? He’s ruggedly handsome to be sure, but he doesn’t have the smartass personality to go with it. Iron Man/Tony Stark might have been my choice for that slot. Not too sure there’s a Firefly equivalent for Hulk, though. Jayne maybe?
