Pacific Rim VFX Video Breakdown And Lego Battle Scene

While Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim enjoys the spoils of crossing the $400 million mark, the science fiction film is starting to build a bigger audience on Blu-ray/DVD. While we wait to hear whether or not Pacific Rim will get a sequel, take a look at visual effects house Rodeo FX’s VFX breakdown of Guillermo del Toro’s film.
It’s amazing to see how much CGI is actually in Pacific Rim. Of course, the Jaegers and Kaiju are completely CGI, but at times the visual effects look seamless in moments where you wouldn’t think there would be CGI, such as exteriors on landing pads. I guess that’s just part of movie-making in the 21st Century. Although some critics felt lukewarm on the film, there’s no denying that Pacific Rim looks very convincing and believable.
Rodeo FX is a Montreal-based visual effects production studio for high-end films and advertising. The effects house recently worked on the CGI for the magician heist film Now You See Me, Michael Bay’s Pain and Gain, and the sci-fi teen romance film The Host.
Meanwhile, artist Olive Seon recreated a battle scene from Pacific Rim using Legos. The Jaeger Gipsy Danger is mostly made out of green Lego bricks, while the Kaiju Knifehead cuts a menacing figure of gray and yellow Lego bricks. The Lego set looks pretty elaborate, with jets soaring through the sky and an underground bullet train beneath the fighting Jaeger and Kaiju. Gipsy Danger even has a blue tanker ship that it will use as a baseball bat. Considering that Lego doesn’t make a Lego set of Pacific Rim characters (yet), it’s really impressive that Olive Seon made something like this from plain ol’ Lego blocks.
Olive Seon is a Lego artist from South Korea. In the past, she has created a few Lego sets of Godzilla and some of his Kaiju brethren like Mothra, so it’s not completely out of the question that she would also dive into the world of Pacific Rim.
Recently, the good people at SreenJunkies released a new “Honest Trailer” featuring Pacific Rim. The best part of their new video is when they called the sci-fi movie, “Awesome Dumb Robot Movie!” Pacific Rim is pretty dumb, but it’s also pretty awesome. Not many movies could do both, but leave it up to Guillermo del Toro for delivering a movie with the perfect amount of “dumb” and “awesome.”
Although Legendary Pictures has yet to green-light a Pacific Rim sequel, del Toro and co-screenwriter Travis Beacham are working on the script for Pacific Rim 2. According to del Toro, the sequel film would dive deeper into the mythology established in Pacific Rim. It would also feature bigger Kaiju and a new monster that is a mixture between Kaiju and Jaegers. Hopefully, del Toro would have an opportunity to make Pacific Rim 2, but until then it’s up to Legendary Pictures to make it happen.
