Godzilla Starts Production In March For A 2014 Release Date

Last July, director Gareth Edwards took the stage during the Legendary Pictures panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con to announce his plans for a Godzilla reboot movie. He also showed a sizzle reel of his vision for a new Godzilla. The reports out of Hall H were feverish as genre fans displayed their hunger for all things Godzilla. Well, it seems like the executives at Warner Bros. are happy to satisfy that hunger because they are looking to start production on the new film this March.
According to HitFix.com, after Gareth Edwards showcased his plans and vision for Godzilla on the Warner lot, the studio was pleased with what they saw and scheduled the movie production for this spring. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are looking at a possible 2014 release date for the giant-monster movie. If Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is a hit this summer, then a 2014 release date could be beneficial for Godzilla and Edwards.
A few months ago, Legendary hired screenwriter Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) to polish the original script. Screenwriter Dave Callaham (The Expendables) had written the original draft, and then later it was revised by screenwriters David Goyer (Batman Begins) and Max Borenstein (The Seventh Son). Gareth Edwards has said numerous times that his vision for Godzilla would be “a grounded, realistic approach.” He later added, “If this really happened, what would it be like?”
Edwards took the same approach with his 2010 film, Monsters, where he made a more realistic alien invasion movie. Whether than just showing mayhem and destruction, Monsters was more about how an alien invasion might temper a couple’s voyage from Mexico to the United States, and the changes it would cause in our real world. It was character- and narrative-based rather than effects driven. Hopefully, Edwards’ style and sensibility should work well for a new Godzilla flick.
