Godzilla 2 Finds Its Screenwriter

godzillaWhen Hollywood studios sit down to think about sequels to their films, I can’t imagine that they do much more than look at the final box office take before making their decisions, rather than lending an ear to the audiences that bought the tickets to the original movie. (A gross generalization, but one I’d love to be proven wrong on.) For proof on that, Legendary Pictures is bringing screenwriter Max Borenstein back to script what will hopefully be a monster-filled Godzilla 2.

We were pretty big fans of Godzilla around these parts, but much of that love was directed at Gareth Edwards’ classy direction and the way he made a disaster movie that felt more personal to audiences. What was keeping it most unpersonal, though, was Borenstein’s script, which combined monstrous coincidences with some of the most boring human characters in creature feature history. Don’t get me wrong, Bryan Cranston knocked his small part out of the park, and the first 10 minutes made it seem like this was a story steeped in humanity. But then Aaron Taylor-Johnson stepped in and dull-mugged his way through one should-have-been-more-exciting sequence after another.

Power Rangers, Godzilla 2, And Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 Get Release Dates

fb share tweet share

power rangersThere are a lot of movies in development right now, especially when it comes to sequel, reboots, and adaptations. The likes of Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm, DC, and Warner Bros. even have their schedule set, or at least mostly set, all the way out to 2020. We’re not looking quite that far into the future, but a Power Rangers movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, and Godzilla 2 all recently set their release dates, if you’re looking forward to any of those movies.

I’m old enough to think that the Power Rangers are totally stupid, and their continuing popularity never ceases to amaze me. But I like a lot of totally stupid things myself, so I have no room to talk when it comes to other people’s taste. And there are far more offensive things in the world, like the Teletubbies, those things are horrifying. THR reports that Lionsgate has just set the release date for a big budget adaptation for July 22, 2016.

Godzilla 2 Will Bring Back Mothra And More After Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars Spinoff

fb share tweet share

godzillaLike a moth to a flame shooting out of a giant radioactive creature’s mouth, fan-favorite feature creature Mothra will grace the silver screen once again. And that’s not the half of it. In one of the more exciting announcements to come out of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Legendary Pictures head Thomas Tull declared Godzilla 2 will definitely feature Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah. Not. Just. One of them. All three of them. I think I need some air.

Legendary is a company that likes big things, so it’s no surprise that they took to their panel to deliver big news. Though Godzilla director Gareth Edwards wasn’t on hand to talk to fans in person, he was seen on a video officially saying Godzilla 2 is an imminent part of his career, and that he’ll get back to creating disasters once he’s finished with his upcoming Star Wars spinoff that he signed on for a few months ago.

Godzilla’s Getting A Sequel, Surprising No One

fb share tweet share

godzillaLike many others, we at GFR expected Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla to roar into theaters in a big way, but I’m not sure any of us really thought it could amass almost $200 million worldwide in a single weekend, with over $93 million earned domestically. With that kind of money coming in, one could easily joke about Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures already spinning the cogs on a sequel…but it’s no joking matter anymore. Warner and Legendary are officially getting behind Godzilla 2.

(Allows for all the immediate cheers and groans to quiet down.)

That’s right, the inevitable has happened not even three days after the film’s opening. Of course, the sequel talks started even before that, with presumptions that Godzilla would be a box office bonanza. But Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Warner execs were keeping mum about a follow-up’s prospects until they saw just how successful the monstrous marketing campaign was. And $196 million later, I think it’s safe to say the promotions did what they were supposed to.

Could Mothra Appear In Godzilla 2?

MothraGodzilla doesn’t even open for another two weeks—slightly less than that now, actually—but, like every big Hollywood blockbuster that people expect to rake in big bucks at the box office, that’s not going to stop anyone from talking about the future of the franchise. We know that the big guy isn’t the only monster in the new movie—there’s an entirely new addition to the canon named Muto who we’ve seen primarily in toy form. We’ve now heard that at least one fan favorite opponent isn’t in the film, but apparently could appear in the Godzilla 2, should such a thing come to pass.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have just started screening Godzilla for members of the press, beginning with New York and Los Angeles. While critics are still embargoed from reviewing the movie, that isn’t going to stop anyone from discussing it entirely. Director Gareth Edwards did a question and answer session after the LA screening. Badass Digest was present and says there’s an interesting Easter egg in the film that could provide a hint about future installments.
