WALL-E, The Futurama Gang, And ALF (Remember ALF?) Get Badass Makeovers

fb share tweet share

WALLEThe internet never tires of mashing one thing up with another thing to create a third, possibly even better, thing. DeviantARTist Tohad has found one particular mash-up niche and made it his own with his “BADASS” series, which takes beloved characters from children’s cartoons and videogames and then turns them into heavily armed sociopaths. Honestly, WALL-E and EVE up there are the tamest of the bunch, but all it took was soldering WALL-E’s head onto the top of ED-209’s body and you’d better check your watch, because it’s time to kill all humans. And say, speaking of Bender’s catchphrase, I wonder what the Futurama crew is up to inside Tohad’s twisted brain…

The Best And Worst Time Travelers To Time Travel With (Other Than The Doctor)

fb share tweet share

companionsDoctor Who returned for its eighth modern season, with Peter Capaldi’s Twelve enjoying a Victorian adventure with his latest companion, Clara Oswin Oswald (Jenna Coleman). And that’s a big part of the appeal of Doctor Who, isn’t it? The idea of getting a guided tour of all of time and space. If the TARDIS suddenly materialized in your living room and the Doctor invited you in, who wouldn’t be tempted to sign on for as long as he’d have you? But if you’re going to travel through time, you want to have good company and you want it to not be an enormous pain in the ass. As you’ll see in this article, that’s not always guaranteed. Sometimes you get a sweet-ass DeLorean, sure…but sometimes you get Ashton Kutcher.

Just in case you’re in the market for a vacation into last week, you’ll definitely want to consider your options. Thankfully we did the legwork for you. Here are our picks for which time travelers would be worth your time, and which ones you’ll want to avoid at all costs.

Futurama Rendered In 3D GGI Is Absolutely Spectacular

Futurama may be dead and gone, and we’re pretty sure that it’s for real this time, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to forget about it anytime soon. Most of us will probably spend the next thousand years waiting to see just how accurate Matt Groening’s vision of the future is, and decrying the fact that we don’t yet have bending robots to bend all of the things we need bent. We can always cryogenically freeze ourselves to get there and see it on our own. Artist Alexi Zakharov rendered the world of the beloved animated series in 3D, and the result is nothing short of spectacular.

Just take a moment to watch this short video that re-imagines the New New York skyline of the 31st century in breathtaking detail. You can’t help but marvel as this slick, sleek version of the Planet Express ship, presumably piloted by the one-eyed, purple-haired badass Turanga Leela (voiced by Katy Segal), as it soars through the congested traffic of the futuristic megalopolis hauling random packages to distant and dangerous worlds.

Cosmos, Futurama, And More Represent Sci-Fi With Primetime Emmy Nominations

fb share tweet share

cosmosAs sci-fi fans, we all know that unless an awards ceremony is specifically centered on science fiction, genre programming doesn’t stand much of a chance against the plethora of mainstream media out there. That said, the nominations for the 66th annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning, and science and sci-fi programming actually made a strong appearance, thanks in large part to Fox’s Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey. The biggest story of the announcement was actually what didn’t make the list—they will rue their ignorance of Orphan Black’s dramatic superiority—but that’s for another story. For now, we celebrate.

The Neil deGrasse Tyson-hosted Cosmos was the definite standout, though it obviously didn’t get recognized in the Outstanding Lead Actor category or anything like that. Some of the infotainment series’ more notable and deserving noms were for Outstanding or Documentary Series, Outstanding Cinematography for Nonfiction, and Outstanding Special and Visual Effects, while the show’s art direction, music, main titles, and sound editing were also recognized. With twelve total nominations, it tied with acclaimed narrative series like True Detective and Orange is the New Black. (Breaking Bad earned 16 nominations.)
