Dexter: New Blood Season 2 Cast News

It didn’t seem like it could happen, but there’s a chance we could see Dexter: New Blood Season 2 at some point. When it originally aired on ShowtimeDexter became a worldwide phenomenon for its approach to death and murder in a delightfully sardonic way.

Actor Michael C. Hall brought depth to a disturbing antihero working in the Miami police department as a blood splatter analyst. Moonlighting as a serial killer who only kills bad people, Hall’s Dexter was an obsession for many viewers.

Dexter eventually concluded in 2013 after some heavy cliffhangers that left our fateful protagonist a permanent fugitive. Showtime brought the character back to life in 2021 with Dexter: New Blood, a 10-episode limited series that explored Dexter’s life after Miami and his rekindled relationship with his now teenage son Harrison (Jack Alcott).

Many fans of the series have been curious if Showtime will bring back Dexter: New Blood for Season 2, but some of the details might still be forthcoming from the network.

Here is everything we know about Dexter: New Blood Season 2, plotlines, casting announcements, and a possible release date.

Spoilers for Dexter: New Blood Season 1 coming up

SEASON 1 LEFT ROOM FOR A DEXTER: NEW BLOOD SEASON 2

Dexter‘s series finale depicted Dexter’s sister Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter) dying during a hurricane hitting Miami, Florida. Dexter Morgan flees the city, and the show ends with a glimpse of the main character in a new snowy location, deep in isolation. The finale was divisive among loyal Dexter fans, and the ending plagued Showtime long enough that they decided to reboot the series almost 10 years after it went off the air.

Dexter: New Blood opens with Dexter Morgan’s new life in the small town of Iron Lake, New York, where he goes by the name of Jim Lindsay. This alias is a play on the writer Jeff Lindsay who penned the actual Dexter novels the show is based on. Dexter works at a local sporting goods store where he romances the chief of police Angela Bishop (Julia Jones).

Chaos ensues when Dexter’s estranged son Harrison locates his missing father, and the two explore their inner Dark Passengers. Dexter: New Blood was initially intended by showrunner Clyde Phillips to wrap up the original series. However, the popularity of the quasi-reboot made audiences believe that Dexter: New Blood deserves a Season 2.

The storyline involving Dexter Morgan might have run its course, including his deceased relatives visiting him as a moral compass via imaginary friendships in Dexter’s mind. Dexter meets his maker at the end of Dexter: New Blood, signifying the finality of a long-running character. However, that doesn’t mean Michael C. Hall can’t return for another iteration as a ghost in someone else’s mind, as his father and sister have done before.

The idea of Harrison Morgan’s Dark Passenger coming to light, his attempts to suppress it, and the relationship he has with his father might be compelling enough to be a recurring theme. Dexter: New Blood Season 2 could explore this theme and focus squarely on Harrison’s journey after the death of his biological father.

In an interview with Esquire, Jack Alcott spoke about Dexter: New Blood and the final episode, which saw Harrison kill his father for breaking the rules of killing only those who deserve it.

He explained, “Even though it is the right ending, the ending the show deserves, the ending the character deserves, the ending the character wants, there’s definitely some guilt that comes with killing off one of the coolest TV characters of all time.”

The ending to Dexter: New Blood gives Alcott a chance to continue playing Harrison in Season 2 and become the star of a new generational shift of antihero legacy. Born in blood, Harrison has already traveled far to reconnect with his family, and the limited series did a great job of featuring returning characters from the original series. Harrison could interact more with these characters and continue his father’s story in a new light.

DEXTER: NEW BLOOD SEASON 2 HAS NOT BEEN GREENLIT

Dexter: New Blood was supposed to only be a 10-episode limited series to conclude the Dexter Morgan arc. However, the series saw high ratings when it debuted in November 2021 on Showtime and made a star out of supporting player Jack Alcott. Rotten Tomatoes currently ranks Dexter: New Blood with a Tomatometer score of 76 percent and an Average Audience Score of 74 percent.

Showtime has yet to greenlight Dexter: New Blood for Season 2, although that might change in the near future.

TVLine reports showrunner Clyde Phillips remarked, “It’s all in Showtime’s hands. If they were to call me and say, ‘We want to do [a second season], we want you to figure it out,’ I’m pretty busy, but I would drop everything I’m doing and jump right into it. I would love to do it, but it’s really up to Showtime.”

THE CAST COULD RETURN FROM THE FIRST SEASON OR COULD BE ALL-NEW

As of early 2023, it doesn’t appear that the 64-year-old Phillips has any projects on the horizon, with Dexter: New Blood being the last television show he worked on.

Actor Jack Alcott counts Dexter: New Blood as his most significant acting credit to date. However, he will be featured in an upcoming episode of the whodunit Peacock show Poker Face, created by Glass Onion director Rian Johnson. A starring role in Dexter: New Blood Season 2 would be a promotion for the working entertainer.

Deceased relatives revealing themselves to be imaginary presences in Dexter Morgan’s life has been a recurring theme for the character in Dexter and Dexter: New Blood. It would be plausible for Dexter: New Blood Season 2 to feature Michael C. Hall portraying an imaginary version of the character for his son Harrison.

Hall is currently working as part of the voice cast of The Gettysburg Address alongside Cary Elwes and Sam Elliott, so he might have an opening in his schedule to play Dexter’s ghost if Showtime came calling.

Julia Jones might also return to Dexter: New Blood for Season 2. As chief of police Angela Bishop in the limited series, she helps cover up Harrison’s murder of his father so the teenager can start anew. Her involvement in the cover-up and protective relationship with Harrison might further be fleshed out in an additional season of television.

THERE IS NO FIRM RELEASE DATE FOR DEXTER: NEW BLOOD SEASON 2

Since Showtime hasn’t said much about Dexter: New Blood in the last year or so, a potential Season 2 of the series has yet to begin casting or filming any scenes. There are also no confirmed reports of episodes written for Season 2 by Clyde Phillips or other writers. With that in mind, a release date has also not been disclosed by Showtime at this moment.

Gary Levine, the president of Showtime Network, confirmed to TVLine in September 2022 that the network does not currently have plans to renew the limited series. Confirming that “it’s too soon to say,” Levine said at the time that Showtime was “still basking in the glow of the limited series, which was everything we hoped for.”

No other updates have been announced since September 2022, leaving Dexter: New Blood fans hoping for more in Season 2.

However, there’s no denying how successful the series has been for Showtime, which is often a marker for a renewal of some kind. According to a report by VarietyDexter: New Blood is the most-watched television show in the history of the network, with more than 8 million viewers each week when it premiered. Those are numbers that Showtime would likely want to replicate, so Dexter: New Blood Season 2 should be in the works sometime soon.
