Rian Johnson’s Looper will be released into theaters at the end of September. To get ready for the sci-fi thrill ride, Sony has released several trailers and other promotional materials, but this fan-created 8-bit video game-inspired trailer will get sci-fi geeks even more excited to watch Johnson’s mind-bending time travel movie.

Animator Deepak Chetty created an 8-bit video game version of Looper complete with cut scenes, character selection menus, and 8-bit video game music. In true videogame fashion, scrolling text appears on the screen, giving the player information about the world of Looper before bringing you to a character selection screen. You can either play as young Joe from the year 2042 (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) or older Joe from the year 2072 (Bruce Willis). Maybe more movie trailers should be this interactive. Deepak Chetty is a Graphics Designer and Animator from Brooklyn, New York. He has worked on films like Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired and Spider-Man 3. He is currently working on a sci-fi short film called The Ascendant.

Looper is the latest from director Rian Johnson. He made a name for himself with his first film, Brick, which won a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005. In the movie Looper, time travel exists and is used by mob bosses when they want to get rid of someone. The target is sent back 30 years into the past, where a hired assassin named Joe awaits to kill and dispose of the body. But when the mob sends back his older self, both versions of Joe must work together to put an end to the mysterious criminal mastermind behind the hit.

Looper will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on September 6th and will go into wide release on September 28th.
