Despite its story and character problems, The Walking Dead has consistently been a source of high ratings for the cable network AMC. It’s the highest rated TV series the network has ever had, so it’s no surprise that AMC executives want The Walking Dead to stay on its airwaves for as long as possible.

While talking to THR, AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan expressed his interest in seeing The Walking Dead last forever. Sapan said, “We hope that zombies live forever and we’ve just begun to find out what the post-apocalyptic world is like. So that we’ll be sitting here at the Barclays conference in 2022 discussing the fact that Walking Dead is not over.”

If The Walking Dead TV series will be anything like the graphic novel its based on, it’s easy to imagine the zombie series living on for quite some time. Creator Robert Kirkman launched The Walking Dead graphic novel in 2003. Believe it or not, the comic book series is still going strong, with issue #110 released a few weeks ago. New issues of The Walking Dead are released once a month, and there are no signs of it slowing down or wrapping up.

From its origins as a comic series, The Walking Dead has spawned two novel series, video games, merchandise, and, of course, a highly rated cable TV series. Why would AMC or Robert Kirkman ever want to stop The Walking Dead gravy train? It could easily become The Simpsons of long-running live-action TV shows. Let’s just hope it can find some consistency of quality if it plans on sticking around for the long haul.

The Walking Dead returns for season four sometime in October on AMC.
