Nintendo Switch gamers have something to look forward to this summer since Nintendo announced a new Kirby’s Dream Buffet game for the handheld. The new party platformer game will be set in the Kirby universe, and it seems like an incredibly interesting title that is certainly going to captivate Nintendo’s multiplayer gaming community. Nintendo also released a short trailer for the upcoming game, showcasing the colorful and tasty world Kirbys would have to race. See the trailer below:

According to IGN, Kirby’s Dream Buffet will be a Fall Guys-like multiplayer gaming experience in which different Kirbys race one another across bright and colorful tracks in an attempt to eat as many strawberries as possible and become the plumpest Kirby in town. The tracks won’t be limited to strawberry cake-only but feature a variety of food-themed stages in four racing rounds. Players will race each other in a downhill roll, with the heaviest one being the winner of the race.

However, the racing mechanics in the upcoming Kirby’s Dream Buffet consist of more than a mere race to the finish. While rolling downhill towards the goal, players need to eat as many strawberries as possible. This will help Kirby grow, and the bigger it gets, the faster it can roll towards the finish line. Players can also pick up various boxes on their way down and gain different food items and certain power-ups they can use to enhance their run or slow down their opponents.

Kirby’s Dream Buffet is scheduled to join this year’s Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which launched in March this year, with Nintendo promising a variety of other titles as the franchise celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2022, and Dream Buffet appears to be one of those titles. Kirby and the Forgotten Lands is the 13th mainline game, still widely popular and considered one of the best in the Kirby franchise.

Admittedly, Kirby’s Dream Buffet does resemble a racing version of Fall Guys, with some elements borrowed from Mario Party and blended into a single title. Luckily Nintendo didn’t slap some questionable title with the new game, as it nearly happened with 1992’s Super Mario Kart. The recipe for controversy would’ve raised some eyebrows if the company hadn’t instructed the game’s developer to change the title, explaining that it doesn’t sound so cool in English as it does in Japanese.

Regardless, Kirby’s Dream Buffet is one of the latest gaming titles in the Kirby franchise, which has a very long and diverse history, with numerous gaming genres throughout the years. Long-time fans of the franchise will instantly recognize the franchise’s potential to take numerous forms, and the upcoming title doesn’t deviate from a working formula. It simply takes several main elements from Nintendo’s other games and binds them into a single title, just like Kirby Air Ride did in 2003.

Unfortunately, Nintendo didn’t disclose the precise release date for Kirby’s Dream Buffet, other than saying that the game will be released this summer — so it’s safe to assume that we’ll see it on Switch by the first half of September.
