Netflix is ready to capitalize on the massive success of its recent One Piece anime live-action adaptation and has officially announced the release date for the live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho (via Popverse). The hugely popular manga by Yoshihiro Togashi later received a popular anime adaptation, which many fans hold in high regard. Netflix certainly has some loft expectations to live up to, but if you can make One Piece fans happy, maybe you can do the same with Yu Yu Hakusho fans.

Yu Yu Hakusho, the next big live-action anime adaptation, is coming to Netflix later this year.

Surprisingly, fans won’t even have to wait long for this Yu Yu Hakusho adaptation, as it premieres on Netflix in just a couple of months on December 14. While Netflix had previously revealed that the live-action adaptation was in the works, it’s safe to say no one expected it to happen this soon. They do seem to be trying to keep the good vibes from the success of One Piece going.

The Yu Yu Hakusho live-action adaptation has a lot riding on it because if it can win over fans, then it will prove that the One Piece adaptation wasn’t just a fluke.

Of course, Yu Yu Hakusho fans are surely cautiously optimistic about this upcoming live-action adaptation since One Piece is so far the exception and not the rule for Netflix’s live-action adaptations. The streamer has previously tried its hand at an adaptation of the widely loved Cowboy Bebop, which flopped about as hard as you could imagine. Before that, it tried a live-action Death Note movie, met with similar derision from fans and newcomers alike.

The Yu Yu Hakusho live-action adaptation has a lot riding on it because if it can win over fans, then it will prove that the One Piece adaptation wasn’t just a fluke. With the streamer having multiple live-action adaptations in the pipeline and the already confirmed second season of One Piece, the streamer will need to continue prioritizing quality over quantity. Netflix is taking another stab at Death Note and attempting a live-action My Hero Academia movie in the future, so expectations are definitely at an all-time high.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to seeing if the live-action Yu Yu Hakusho can come close to the quality of the manga and anime series. The story follows a teenager named Yusuke, who is killed by a car after an uncharacteristic sacrificial act to save a child from being hit by a car. After Yusuke is presented with a series of tests in the Underworld, he is given a second chance and the job of Underworld Detective.

After Yusuke gets his new title, he must investigate cases involving demons and spirits. The live-action Yu Yu Hakusho adaptation will star Takumi Kitamura as Yusuke Urameshi, Shuhei Uesugi as Kazuma Kuwabara, Jun Shison as Kurama, and Kanata Hongo as Hiei. While the anime doesn’t have quite as big of a following as One Piece, there will still be plenty of fans interested in this adaptation, especially those who were glued to the screen when it was played on Toonami from 2002 to 2006.

If you want to check out the Yu Yu Hakusho anime, you can stream it on Crunchyroll. Otherwise, make sure to tune in to the live-action adaptation when it premieres on December 14. We’ll keep you updated on more anime news in the meantime.
