In our modern era of political upheaval, it seems that today’s audiences are trying at every turn to escape from overtly political programming. However, this wasn’t the case in 2005, when V For Vendetta premiered to massive critical acclaim. The film remains a classic to this day, with droves of fans still revisiting the iconic dystopian comic book adaptation.

V For Vendetta On Netflix

V For Vendetta is currently available to stream on Netflix, for those who have somehow managed to miss the classic film nearly two decades since its release.

The Wachowski sisters adapted the film’s screenplay from a limited graphic novel series penned by Alan Moore, David Lloyd, and Tony Weare in 1988.

V For Vendetta also serves as the directorial debut for filmmaker James McTeigue, who would later go on to helm projects such as Sense8, Marco Polo, and Messiah.

Natalie Portman And Hugo Weaving

The film stars an ensemble cast absolutely stacked with incredible talent, including Hugo Weaving, Natalie Portman, Rupert Graves, Stephen Rea, John Hurt, and legendary comedian Stephen Fry.

Those who have not seen V For Vendetta will surely be familiar with the iconography of the film, as the movie popularized the use of the iconic Guy Fawkes mask for anti-establishment groups such as Antifa and Anonymous.

The mask has also become an iconic symbol outside of political purposes, rivaling that of Ghostface from the Scream series or the Jason Vorhees hockey mask.

A Dystopian Future

V For Vendetta centers on a dystopian depiction of Britain, set not far in the future of the film’s release.

A fascist regime known as the Norsefire party has taken control of the nation and has begun to imprison or execute anyone who doesn’t fall in line with their conservative ideology, such as members of the LGBTQ community, immigrants, and people of color.

One night, without warning, a masked vigilante known only as “V” rescues the daughter of two deceased political activists who has been forcefully detained by secret police.

V On A Rampage

V then firebombs a historic British courthouse before hijacking the state-sanctioned television network generally reserved for propaganda in order to take responsibility for the attacks and encourage a growing resistance movement.

From there, V continues his rampage through the fascist government’s decision-makers, including the assassination of figures such as Norsefire’s lead propagandist and the Bishop of London.

As V For Vendetta continues to build toward its stunning climax, the film provides a host of insane twists and turns that take audiences on a non-stop thrill ride.

Shocking And Inspiring

V For Vendetta shocked and inspired critics, who generally gave the film positive reviews. The movie was maligned by a number of conservative groups for obvious political reasons, though audiences at large have resonated with the anti-establishment themes presented in the 2005 classic.

The film currently holds a solid 73 percent critic score on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, with an impressive 90 percent audience score.
