Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have made some mighty fine movies in their careers. One of the best movies either of them has done is arguably Saving Private Ryan, a film the pair worked on together for a 1998 release. Now, with many more projects behind them, both together and separate, it sounds like the seasoned pros are looking for the right opportunity to work together again. According to what insider Daniel Richtman has shared with his Patreon page, the duo is looking for a new movie they can do together.

The insider didn’t share any information on whether they have any particular ideas for the type of project Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg would like to create together. It’s entirely possible that the creative team isn’t yet sure what kind of movie they’re interested in exactly, but with their longstanding relationship in Hollywood, they likely know what to expect from each other and have an idea of what types of projects the other would want to do. That type of shorthand is something they both probably find valuable.

In the past, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have worked together on Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal, Bridge of Spies, and The Post. In addition to these five films, they both worked on the 2001 mini-series Band of Brothers, though in a different capacity. On that project, Tom Hanks was a writer, director, producer, and actor in a small role. Spielberg worked on the project as an executive producer.

It’s uncommon in Hollywood for people to have the opportunity to work on five films at the level Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have been able to create together. Their careers have been pretty astounding so far, and they’re comfortable enough in their fame that it seems like they could do pretty much anything. If this rumor from Richtman proves true, it makes sense that they may simply be passing calls around with others, networking, and seeing what’s out there until something strikes their fancy. As a producer, Spielberg has many projects currently announced, including Gremlins 3. As a director, the most recent film we’ve seen in theaters was Ready Player One.

We recently saw Tom Hanks in News of the World and Greyhound, both of which were historical dramas, a genre Hanks seems particularly interested in these days. He’s also been in a fair number of movies that were adapted from novels, including the Spielberg projects Saving Private Ryan and Catch Me If You Can.

What would be truly interesting to see happen, though, is for the pair to combine their skills in new ways. These days, Tom Hanks is also writing, directing, and producing. With the pairs longstanding relationship, and both of them having experience in these areas, it would be exciting to see what the creative team could create if they pushed their relationship further and co-wrote a script. If both of them had their hands in more areas for the film, what could they create then?
