The origin story being Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman movies is finally arriving. A trailer is out that gives an in-depth look at The King’s Man with a new cast who got the secret service jump-started in the first place.

Watch The King’s Man trailer below.

We see a blend of footage from the first two films, 2014’s Kingsman: The Secret Service and its sequel 2017’s The Golden Circle, and a look at the prequel, The King’s Man, in the trailer. We see the evolution of tech over the years and the formation of the organization’s core values.

Unlike a traditional trailer, The King’s Man gives us more of the previous installments than the movie itself. What we do get are clips of the director and his cast talking about the movie and its vision. Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans) described that the style is “very Matthew Vaughn.” From what is seen in the footage that is now live, it rings true with the action and characters that are highlighted.

The film will not only follow the buttoned-up secret service’s origin. Taking place around World War 1, we get to see through The King’s Man trailer that the organization will help take down a plot that is taking place within the war to prevent millions of more deaths.

Based on the comic book series that started in 2012, The Secret Service by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, Vaughn is going to continue expanding this franchise and go beyond what was in the source material. While we got to see a bit of the director in the trailer for The King’s Man, we did not see his co-writer, Karl Gajdusek (The November Man). It marks a departure from his co-writer of the first two entries, Jane Goldman, who also worked with Vaughn on Kick-Ass.

As a prequel in the early 20th century, we will get a whole new cast for the first time, some of who are seen in the trailer for The King’s Man. The previously mentioned Arterton will be joined by Ralph Fiennes (Schindler’s List), Harris Dickinson (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Matthew Goode (The Imitation Game), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Daniel Bruhl (Captain America: Civil War), and Stanley Tucci (Spotlight).

With old footage, The King’s Man trailer gives a trip down memory lane with its previous stars. Its predecessors were led by Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Taron Egerton (Rocketman), and Mark Strong (Zero Dark Thirty).

The King’s Man would not be possible without its first two movies, as highlights the trailer. While not making a ton at the box office for the budgets given, the success has continued to drive in more installments of the franchise. The Secret Service had a budget of $81 million and grossed $414 million worldwide. Cutting it closer with its bigger budget, The Golden Circle had $104 million and earned slightly less than its predecessor with $410 million worldwide.

With the trailer giving fans and newcomers a taste, The King’s Man will hit theaters on December 22, 2021.
