The Disney+ True Crime Thriller That Takes Your Breath Away

Disney true crime thriller with Keira Knightley

From the beginning, Disney+ has positioned itself as a mostly family-friendly streaming service, but that may be changing now that this streaming service offers everything that is available on Hulu. That means fans sick of constantly watching Marvel and Star Wars content can tune in to some of the scariest and most spine-tingling content once exclusive to Hulu. If you already have a subscription to both services and you’re looking for something that will keep you on the edge of your seat long after the credits, then it’s time for you to stream the Boston Strangler movie.

Boston Strangler is, of course, named after the real-life killer who was responsible for killing 13 women in the Boston area back in the ‘60s. The movie takes place in 1962 and we follow reporter Loretta McLaughlin (played by Keira Knightley) as she investigates the death of these women. She is joined by fellow reporter Jean Cole (played by Carrie Coon), and the two of them race to discover who the Boston Strangler (David Dastmalchian) really is.

In addition to the great cast, part of what makes Boston Strangler such an interesting film to stream is its accessibility. If you’re already a big true crime fan and know all about the case, then it’s fun to enjoy the surprising historical accuracy of the film even as it blends in fictional elements to create a great narrative. However, if you don’t know much about true crime in general and the Boston Strangler in particular, the film does a great job of bringing you up to speed and making everything look and sound much more exciting than your average true crime podcast.

When Boston Strangler first came out, it was a big deal for Hulu because it was a film exclusive to that streaming platform. It was also a major success: when the movie came out on March 19, 2023, it quickly became the third-most streamed film across all platforms for the entire week. Now that Disney will be offering all of Hulu’s once-exclusive content, true crime fans can look forward to watching more killer crime thrillers like this courtesy of the House of Mouse.

For the most part, audiences and critics alike have enjoyed what this film has to offer. On Rotten Tomatoes, Boston Strangler currently has a 68 percent critical score (meaning that it’s “Certified Fresh” among critics) and a 70 percent audience score. One thing most critics agreed on was that the film has an amazing cast, and considering that we’d watch Kiera Knightley and Carrie Coon simply reading the phone book, we’d have to agree.

Between the strikes last year and the fact that winter has traditionally been a dumping ground for bad films, we were happy to discover Boston Strangler on Disney+: there’s nothing quite like the combination of a warm blanket and a chilling thriller when you want to relax. If you’d like to experience that for yourself, all you have to do is stream Boston Strangler today. Just be warned: the movie is good enough that you might end up spending the next week (or month, or year) looking into the fascinating details of the real case.
