With the critical and commercial success of 2018’s Bumblebee, it seems as though the Transformers franchise is starting to move away from the Michael Bay insanity of the first five films. Even though it has been a few years since the last Transformers film, there are several new installments in the franchise in the works. Now, a new rumor suggests that one of these next projects is looking for a Tessa Thompson type for one of their leads.

This rumor comes from gossip writer Daniel Richtman, who shares this from his Patreon page. While Richtman states they are looking for a Tessa Thompson type, it’s unclear which of the upcoming projects this would be for. Richtman does say though that this film would feature two leads.

Right now, the Transformers franchise has several films in the works. Paramount has said they plan on releasing a Transformers film on June 24, 2022, although it’s unclear which in development film this would be. Also, considering that this announcement was made in May of last year, it’s also uncertain if this is still the plan. This film looks likely to be one of two films: a Bumblebee sequel which was announced late last year, or the Transformers: Beast Wars project that is also in development. Either one could technically star Tessa Thompson.

We do know that one of these projects is being written by Zodiac and Murder Mystery writer James Vanderbilt, while another is from Joby Harold, writer of Zack Snyder’s upcoming Army of the Dead film. Steven Caple Jr., who directed 2018’s Creed II, is directing an upcoming Transformers project, although it’s unclear if he’s directing the Bumblebee sequel or Transformers: Beast Wars. However, considering that Caple Jr. has worked with Tessa Thompson on Creed II, it seems likely that whichever film he’s working on will likely be the one looking for a Tessa Thompson type.

Over the last few years, Tessa Thompson has become one of the most sought after actresses in Hollywood. In the last few years, Thompson has starred on the HBO series Westworld, joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the character of Valkyrie, starred in the Men in Black reboot, Men in Black: International alongside her Thor: Ragnarok co-star Chris Hemsworth, and voiced Lady in Disney+’s live-action Lady and the Tramp remake. Last year, Thompson also starred in and executive produced the drama Sylvie’s Love.

Next, Tessa Thompson will be starring in Passing, which received rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival last month, and will be distributed on Netflix later this year. Thompson will also return as the character of Valkyrie in Thor: Love and Thunder, which is currently filming and is planned for a 2022 release.

Transformers is such a massive franchise, even if it has remained dormant for the last few years. But with multiple projects in the works and casting already underway for a Tessa Thompson type, it seems like the Transformers are on their way back, possibly better than ever.
