New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi is the proud owner of an Academy Award, a BAFTA, a Grammy Award, and several others. He has also received two nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards. While his work on the projects that earned him these awards (like Jojo Rabbit) has been hailed by critics, it’s his efforts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with movies like Thor: Ragnarok that really made him a household name. Now, the director is taking a trip to the Star Wars universe with a brand new movie.

With the Obi-Wan Kenobi series just a week from release, Star Wars content has been at the forefront of almost every conversation in entertainment. In a Vanity Fair feature, the cast of the Disney+ show appears alongside their Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Andor counterparts to create a spectacular cover of the magazine’s May 20th edition. There are also interviews with all four actors, the creative teams behind the camera, and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.

Discussing Taika Waititi’s involvement, Kennedy said the Marvel alum will be directing a Star Wars feature film. He will also be working on the script with co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns. She added that his project will probably hit theaters before Rogue Squadron which was previously scheduled for release in December 2023. This means the Patty Jenkins-helmed movie will be delayed once more. Kennedy also explained that while the studio does have a road map for their releases, the new set of movies is unlikely to follow the same relentless beat of their predecessors.

The plot details for Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is still a mystery. But the movie was said to be loosely based on the X-wing book series, which would follow fighter pilots across the galaxy. Meanwhile, Waititi has only shared a handful of vague updates about his Star Wars project. And none of the information gives an insight into what the story could be about. The last time the What We Do in the Shadows director mentioned his new venture was last summer, saying he hoped a Star Wars movie would be next on his job card.

Speaking to the publication, Kennedy revealed some more interesting information about the future of the Star Wars galaxy. When asked if Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige would be producing a future film, she said she would love to see what he comes up with. But nothing is in the works right now. The trilogy from The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson has also been put on the back burner. Although it was talked about five years ago, she said he’s been very busy with the Knives Out sequel and the deal he made at Netflix for several movies.

For now, Star Wars fans can look forward to Obi-Wan Kenobi which debuts next week. As the notorious empire rules over the galaxy, the story will examine how the Jedi Master stayed hidden on Tatooine. It will also detail how he managed to protect a young Luke Skywalker from his father while hiding in the shadows in the years before A New Hope. The series is directed by Deborah Chow, with Joby Harold taking on showrunner duties. It is scheduled to premiere with two episodes on May 27th. The remaining four will follow weekly and conclude on June 22nd.
