It makes sense. The nacelles on a classic D7 have always been unusually wide. If half of each nacelle is actually a gun, not a nacelle, that would explain it.

This is also in keeping with the general Klingon design philosophy. The Klingon Bird of Prey has wing-tip mounted disrupters too.
