For the longest time, spy movies were heavily male-centric. There was Jason Bourne, Jack Ryan, Ethan Hunt, and of course, James Bond. Recently though, we have seen a spate of spy movies with female leads. Some, like The 355, are gritty and tough action yarns that showcase the physical prowess of their female leads. Others, like Spy, lean more into the comedic side of the spy genre with Melissa McCarthy leading the way.

A Call to Spy (2019)

A Call to Spy is based on the true story of two women who help the war efforts by spying for Churchill during World War II. Stana Katic (Castle) stars as Vera Atkins, the “spymistress” in charge of Churchill’s new spy agency, Special Operations Executive (SOE).

Atkins’ task is a daunting one when the SOE enlists the help of two unusual candidates – Virginia Hall, an American with a wooden leg, and Noor Inayat Khan, an Indian Muslim pacifist. Together the three did all they could do to help undermine the Nazi regime.

Code Name: Tiranga

Code Name: Tiranga is an Indian Hindi-language spy movie that follows an undercover agent who is sent on a mission to capture a wanted criminal. Time is not on her side as she takes on the mission for her nation.

Her task becomes even more complicated when her heart unwittingly becomes involved in her mission. Sacrifice might be her only answer. Parineeti Chopra and Harrdy Sandhu star.

Salt

Angelina Jolie is no stranger to spy films – Mr. and Mrs. Smith – and in Salt, she plays on badass spy. Jolie is Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent who has been accused of being a Russian sleeper agent. When Salt is interrogating a Russian defector, he claims that a Russian agent will be responsible for the assassination of the Russian President.

He then claims that this agent’s name is Evelyn Salt. Now on the run from both Americans and Russians, Salt must use all of her vast skills to prove she is not a Russian spy. Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor star alongside Jolie.

Hanna

As far as spy movies go, this action-thriller leans more into a father-daughter relationship than anything else. Hanna is a 15-year-old young lady who lives with her father, Erik, out in the wilds of northern Finland. Erik is an ex-CIA agent, and he is training Hanna to become an elite assassin for one specific reason – to take out his ex-boss Marissa Wiegler.

Apparently, Erik is holding onto a massive CIA secret and Marissa needs to eliminate him before he can spill the beans. It’s a cat-and-mouse game that will have only one winner. Saoirse Ronan stars as Hanna with Eric Bana playing her father and Cate Blanchett as Marissa Wiegler.
