Chris Evans has played a few heroes, like Captain America and the Human Torch, but you don’t often get to see him as grittier characters. Well, you can change that now by checking out his awesome 2013 post-apocalyptic film Snowpiercer. It’s currently available to stream over on Netflix.

Snowpiercer is an adaptation of the French climate fiction graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand, and Jean-Marc Rochette. In the film, the world has been ravaged by a failed experiment to stop global warming that has turned our planet into a Snowball Earth.

Snowpiercer was the English language debut of Bong Joon Ho, who went on to helm Okja and Parasite among others.

The last remnants of humanity live on a train that is separated by class, with the elite living toward the front and the lower class living in the back.

Chris Evans stars in Snowpiercer as Curtis Everett, the man who decides to lead the rebellion against the elite living in the front cars of the train. Along with Evans, the film stars Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Go Ah-sung, John Hurt, and Ed Harris.

It also happens to be the English-language debut of critically acclaimed and Oscar-winning Korean director Bong Joon-ho, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Kelly Masterson.

Snowpiercer was widely praised upon its release, with many people calling it one of the best movies of the year, especially for fans of sci-fi. The film was a commercial success as well, grossing around $86.7 million worldwide against a budget of $40 million, a figure which still makes it one of the most expensive South Korean productions to date.

Of course, it did especially well in Bong Joon-ho’s home country, where it became the tenth highest-grossing domestic film in South Korea with 9.35 million admissions.

Snowpiercer, starring Chris Evans as the leader of a post-apocalyptic rebellion, is streaming on Netflix.

On top of that record, Snowpiercer also holds the South Korean domestic record for the fastest movie (domestic and foreign) to reach four million admissions, along with reaching the record for the highest weekend figures for a Korean film.

The success of the film even led to a TV series, which rebooted the events of the film and starred Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs. The TV series currently has three seasons available, with a fourth and final season announced.

At this time, the fourth season of the Snowpiercer TV series is actually filmed and ready to go, but it was canceled and was announced not to be airing on TNT.

There’s still hope that fans will get to see the final season, as they are currently shopping it out to other outlets in hopes of finding it a home. At least fans have the first three seasons and the awesome movie to hold them over until that all gets figured out.

Of course, if you don’t have time to commit yourself to a full-on TV show, then the Snowpiercer movie will more than satisfy you. The highly acclaimed film keeps you engaged throughout, and Chris Evans provides a great performance that’s pretty far from his typical Marvel fare. It’s also a perfect time to catch up on Bong Joon-ho’s work before his next film hits in 2024.

Snowpiercer also holds the South Korean domestic record for the fastest movie (domestic and foreign) to reach four million admissions, along with reaching the record for the highest weekend figures for a Korean film.

Bong Joon-ho had a hit on his hands with Snowpiercer and the equally fantastic 2017 sci-fi Okja, but he moved away from sci-fi for his incredibly compelling, Oscar-winning smash hit Parasite in 2019.

The international success of Parasite helped to make Bong Joon-ho a household name, and anticipation for his upcoming 2024 film Mickey 17 is at an all-time high. Mickey 17 will see the director returning to the realm of sci-fi, and he’s put together an awesome cast to bring it to the screen.

Mickey 17 is an adaption of Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, which follows a disposable employee who is sent to colonize a new world, with new iterations with their memories intact being sent when one dies.

The film will star an ensemble cast that includes Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. Like in Snowpiercer, Bong Joon-ho will be pulling double-duty as both the director and screenwriter for Mickey 17.

Mickey 17 is set to come out on March 29. 2024, so we’ll have a little while to wait. In the meantime, Snowpiercer is a great sci-fi film that can definitely help hold you over until then. You can head over to Netflix now if you want to check it out.
