Godzilla Has A Smoking Problem In New Mondo Movie Poster

By Rudie Obias | Updated

MondoRoland Emmerich’s Godzilla flick was a mess, to the degree that it’s still a punchline all these years later. Director Gareth Edwards is taking a more realistic approach to the monster in his upcoming reboot, while at the same time trying to honor the spirit of the 1954 original. Regardless of how good the movie proves to be, the gorgeous poster above proves that Godzilla is still the King of Monsters.

During this year’s SXSW festival, Mondo released a new limited edition poster featuring Godzilla formed from a cloud of smoke and destruction. While I only own one Mondo print (a Paranorman print I received as a gift), this actually makes me wish I collected more of them. Phantom City Creative also created a separate print for last year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The designers based the print on the original Godzilla rather than the new one, but it looks more modern nevertheless.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures released a new image featuring Bryan Cranston’s character Joe Brody, which seems like a nod to Jaws, finding a family picture that was lost in the rubble. Juliette Binoche plays his wife, Sandra, who seems to have died in the “Janjira” incident revealed in the film’s newest trailer. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays their son, Lieutenant Ford Brody. It seems that the Brody family will give the film its emotional stakes, while Godzilla himself will provide the action and destruction. These come on the heels of a ton of images released by Warners and Legendary in recent weeks. A majority of them are character shots, while a few continue to tease the King of Monsters.

In other Godzilla news, a clever YouTube user combined the new Godzilla trailer with footage from the original B&W Japanese monster movie. It’s eerie to hear Cranston’s voice on top of footage from 1954, but it’s still just as effective. While the original Godzilla is much older, it’s still a great film that offers the best special effects from that era. The original Godzilla is actually being re-released with a new theatrical restoration for moviegoers this April, celebrating the film’s 60th anniversary.

The restored print is going on a traveling road show through the United States, making stops in New York City; Santa Fe, NM; Portland, Oregon; Seattle, WA; Houston, TX; Lexington, KY; and Columbus, Ohio. If the original Godzilla is playing in your town, try to catch it in all of its B&W, uncut, uncensored, and undubbed glory.

At the moment, there are no plot details available for the remake, aside from a brief synopsis from Warner Bros. and Legendary: “An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.”

Godzilla also stars Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, David Strathairn, and Sally Hawkins, with Akira Takarada from the original film putting in a special cameo appearance. The new movie will roar into theaters everywhere on May 16, 2014, in 3D and IMAX.
