If you’ve already seen the episode, then you know how exciting it was to see one of Season 1’s most beloved characters step into the scene. Showrunner, Nick Santora spoke publicly between seasons about the possibility of Season 1 characters returning to the screen, and Season 2’s most recent episode made his hints at a future cameo reality.

In the episode entitled A Night At The Symphony, Santora finds a reason to bring back Oscar Finlay (played by Malcolm Goodwin). Finlay was a staple character in the show’s first season after Reacher was arrested on suspicion of murder. The two became close as they worked together throughout season one to dispel some dirty business taking place in the Georgia town.

A Night At The Symphony centers around the passing of a government contract called “Little Wing” by a shady senator from Boston. Reacher and his “associates” devise a plan to set one of his aides up to be busted, so they can get more information out of her.

When their plan works, the aide is busted with cocaine in her car by none other than Detective Oscar Finlay. In the Season 1 finale, Finlay and Reacher parted ways after a sincere thanks from Finlay for all the help. Oscar said he was going to go back to Boston to live a happy life.

In the most recent episode of Reacher, fans learn that Oscar Finlay has gone back to working as a detective. Finlay also tells Reacher that he named the dog they rescued in Season 1 of the show “Jack”, given that Reacher never uses the name, and is taking good care of the animal.

After Oscar arrests the corrupt senator’s aide, Reacher and David O’Donnell (Shaun Sipos) pose as FBI Agents. They use their perceived status to manipulate the woman into giving them useful information regarding the politician. Once the deal is done, Finlay makes his exit once again.

There is no word on whether or not the actor will return for more episodes of the newest season. However, Alan Ritchson has been vocal about how he would love to see more characters from season one of the show make a return. He mentioned Willa Fitzgerald’s Roscoe Conklin as a possibility for future cameos.

Ritchson went on to talk about how the show is building a new universe of people and places. It’s beneficial to keep audiences connected with the characters who built the world. Viewers need to know that Reacher is experiencing a real journey, and some of the people he meets along the way are bound to resurface at some point or another.
