Almost one year later, the cause of Ray Liotta’s death has been released. The sudden passing of the Goodfellas star has been attributed to heart failure and respiratory issues such as pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs), respiratory insufficiency, and acute heart failure. Doctors also said that he suffered from atherosclerosis caused by a buildup of substances in and on the artery walls.

According to documents seen by TMZ, officials in the Dominican Republic categorized Ray Liotta’s death as “natural and nonviolent.” The actor, who died in his sleep on May 26, 2022, is survived by his daughter Karsen and fiancée Jacy Nittolo. His movie career spanned five decades, with his breakout role coming in 1986’s Something Wild.

He earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance and was catapulted to A-list status. In 1990, Ray Liotta was cast as Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s crime drama Goodfellas. Adapted from Pileggi’s 1985 nonfiction book Wiseguy, the film also starred Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco, and Paul Sorvino. The story follows the rise and fall of a mob associate from 1955 to 1980.

Following Ray Liotta’s death, several of his co-stars shared heartfelt messages about the 67-year-old. Robert De Niro said he was saddened to learn of his colleague’s passing. “He is way too way young to have left us. May he rest in peace,” The Godfather II star added. Jennifer Lopez, who shared the screen with Liotta in Shades of Blue, said he was the “epitome of a tough guy who was mushy on the inside.”

The actor’s popularity surged in recent years after appearing in the Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark. The story chronicles a violent gang war in the midst of New Jersey’s 1967 riots from the perspectives of mobster Dickie Moltisanti and Tony Soprano, his teenage nephew. Liotta had starred as twin brothers “Hollywood Dick” Moltisanti and Salvatore “Sally” Moltisanti.

Ray Liotta also appeared in the ensemble cast of Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move before his death. He starred as Frank Capelli alongside Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro, David Harbour, Jon Hamm, Amy Seimetz, Brendan Fraser, Kieran Culkin, Noah Jupe, Julia Fox, Frankie Shaw, and Bill Duke. Set in 1954, Detroit, the story follows two small-time criminals who are hired to steal a document.

Ray Liotta was filming Dangerous Waters just before his death. Billed as a thriller, the movie is written and directed by John Barr. The story begins when a teenage girl uncovers a dark secret about her mother’s new boyfriend during a sailing holiday. The movie also stars Odeya Rush, Saffron Burrows, and Eric Dane. The project is currently in post-production.

Ray Liotta was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame after his death. His daughter Karsen participated in the February 2023 ceremony and paid tribute to her father. “I’m so touched to be accepting this honor on behalf of my dad. I couldn’t be more proud of him,” she said via the New York Post.

Karsen described her dad as “a one-of-a-kind actor and the best friend, brother, and father anyone could have asked for.” The tribute was fitting as Ray Liotta was regarded as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and respected actors. The actor will be missed by fans, his co-workers, and his family.
